Warner Bros. Releases DC Film Slate, Ten Movies Coming By 2020

Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara spoke at their annual investors meeting, where he revealed a little more about the studio’s plans for their DC Comic properties. Those plans consist of ten movies being released from 2016 to 2020, and include the confirmation of a few things we already suspected.

The slate goes as follows:

Wonder Woman Lets Loose In This New Fan Film

You have to feel sorry for Wonder Woman. Aside from a great TV run in the ’70s, she really has struggled to make it back onto the screen. Films pitches have resulted in zero success, and TV pilots have come and gone without so much as a whimper.

So, we turn to the fans to make Wonder Woman come to life, and thus far we’ve been pleasantly surprised at how much better they are than the big budget attempts. This must be because of the heart and soul that goes into these projects. In August we talked about First Impressions, which had to be the most emasculating first date ever.

Now we’ve got another interpretation of the character, starring Team Unicorn’s Rileah Vanderbilt as the Princess herself. With an obvious passion for the product,  just read what director Sam Balcomb has to say about this new release.
Firstly, thanks for watching. Whether you like, or dislike, our live action interpretation of Diana of Themyscira, Wonder Woman, born of clay, I think (quite a few of) you will agree she is a character just as vital and crucial to our understanding of humanity as any other superhero… if not more so.

We spent the majority of 2013 working on this — the look, the feel, the aspects we most wanted to portray. It’s a scant two and half minutes, but in the end, it’s one hundred and fifty seconds of pure fantasy, where I get to consider the two sides of my favorite warrior: a crusader in man’s world, and a paragon of virtue told through Greek mythology.

It’s a fun world to hang out in. I hope you enjoy it.
Here is the finished product and it looks incredible

Wonder Woman certainly looks the part; in fact I don’t think she has ever looked better. They managed to make a suit that conforms to the comic book ideals of the character, looks practical and also showcases her sexuality all in one go. The narrative is fantastical, constructed jumping from Paradise Island with her fellow Amazons, then straight to the down and dirty streets where some thugs get their just deserts. It shows how Wonder Woman (like Superman) is a child of two lands. It is also great to watch her kick some serious backside.

The effects are great, and the CGI Minotaur monsters look particularly stunning. In fact the only downside to this is that it’s so short it leaves you craving more of this Wonder Woman. Hopefully the group responsible for this short will give us more exploits of the Amazonian Princess very soon.

First Impressions: Fantastic Short Film Featuring A Long-Awaited DC Character

While DC languishes about 10 miles behind Marvel Studios in their film department, with nothing to really hang their hat on other than Nolan’s The Dark Kight Trilogy, a little ingenuity from choreographer Leo Kei Angelos and writer George Ruiz has really injected some life into a famous DC property. This is definitely needed after disappointing forays into what should have been blockbuster properties. First we dealt with the miserable excuse for a Green Lantern film, and a Man of Steel movie that was so dark and full of unnecessary CGI that it can’t be classified as anything other then 2013’s Most Disappointing Film. Granted, Superman expectations were raised to unattainable heights by that epic last trailer, but the Boy Scouts origin was just way too dark.

Flash is In, Wonder Woman is Out. What About Booster Gold?

During the Arrow Comic-Con panel, we found out some of the guest stars coming to the show, like Bronze Tiger and Brother Blood, but today the big name was announced. It is none other than Barry Allen himself, The Flash!

Barry Allen as the FlashAt their Television Critics Association presentation, The CW president Mark Pedowitz made public the plans to bring Flash to the small screen starting with an appearance on the already hugely popular Arrow. There were quite a few mentions of Coast City during the first season so there were many, including myself, who thought that perhaps the next “big” name to come to Starling City would be Green Lantern.

Well, we were wrong. Just like we were wrong when we assumed there would be no Flash until the Flash feature film came about in 2016.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Barry Allen will roll into Starling City for three episodes before embarking on his own series. He will be introduced in episode 8, then appear in episodes 9 and 20, and then will go off and do his own thing. Writing the Flash episodes will be the crack team of executive producers Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti, along with DC author and now frequent Arrow writer Geoff Johns. Episode 20 will be directed by David Nutter, who directed the series pilot last year.

The odd part about all of this is Warner Bros. and DC are not planning on having the already somewhat established TV universe have anything to do with the proposed and hopefully successful cinematic universe. I understood that decision when it was just Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow because the show does have the “no superpowers and/or metahumans” stance, but now that Flash is coming along? Granted they are saying that when Barry Allen and Oliver Queen meet up Allen won’t be Flash but still, the show about the Fastest Man Alive is getting a soft launch from one without any superpowers. Unless they cast Usain Bolt as Barry Allen, I’m calling bull. Actually, they are beginning the casting process this week so maybe it is Usain Bolt.

The Flash

Another thing we (okay, maybe this was just me) were wrong about? Holding out any hope for the Wonder Woman series to ever make it to air. CW President, Mark Pedowitz, announced yesterday during the same presentation that the Wonder Woman project, Amazon, was on pause.

Excuse me as I roll my eyes in epic fashion. It’s on pause? Did anyone ever press play? Even when we last spoke about the Wonder Woman television series, it was all still speculation and rumor. This whole “pause” business is just irritating. Rip off the Band-Aid Mark, just do it already.

I get that Wonder Woman is a difficult character to try and build a franchise around. Almost every Wonder Woman fan will agree to that. The invisible jet, the different planet, the Lasso of Truth… it’s all a bit fantastic and might be too fantastic to make a TV series out of, outside of the campy 70s. However, either do it or don’t, but stop stringing us along.

Booster Gold on the CW

Speaking of stringing along… What happened to Booster Gold? When Arrow premiered, Andrew Kriesberg was still talking up the Booster Gold series. I got my hopes up. Thought that for sure one of the men behind this great new show would want to do every thing in his power to bring one of his favorite characters to life in a live action setting. Instead we’ve heard nothing about Booster Gold and when Greg Berlanti was asked why Flash was getting a series, he said it was because Flash was one of his favorite characters growing up! Ugh, I just can’t win.

The last bit of Arrow news coming out of TCA, we now know who Caity Lotz is playing. We saw her in the Arrow season two sizzle reel, but there was no indication who her character was beyond “the origin story for Black Canary”. Well get this, Sarah Lance is still alive and she’s returning to Starling City thanks to Caity Lotz. If the Tommy/Laurel/Oliver love triangle was messy, I can’t even imagine how dysfunctional Ollie stuck between two sisters is going to be.

Despite my irritation, this is exciting news. As a DC fan it’s easy to look at the Marvel cinematic success and be jealous, but Arrow and the new Flash show (and Booster Gold and Wonder Women if they ever get made) are all part of a long and storied history of DC characters on the small screen. They are doing well, so here’s hoping they continue to do well…

By giving me a Booster Gold show.

SDCC2013: The Lego Movie Gets a Poster, a Game, and Big-Name Voices!

So I’ve already gushed over The Lego Movie trailer but now there’s even more news coming out of Comic-Con, plus a new poster so I get to do it all over again!

First off, check out this new The Lego Movie Comic-Con exclusive poster!

Lego Movie

Love that lens flare.

Not only is there a new poster, but it was announced this week that there will be a The Lego Movie video game as well. Much like their other games, such as Lego Marvel Super Heroes, it will have plenty of characters to collect and play, 90 to be exact. Plus 15 levels of Lego Movie fun!

Just that news would be enough but during the Warner Bros./Legendary panel at Comic-Con, which brought us the news of the Man of Steel sequel and Flash and Justice League movies, the actors who would be providing some of the voices of the characters in The Lego Movie were announced as well.

It had already been announced that the main character, Emmet, would be voiced by the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy star, Chris Pratt, but now we also know that Channing Tatum will be providing the voice of Superman and Jonah Hill that of Green Lantern. While those are big names, it’s the voice of Wonder Woman that is a little bit surprising.

Wonder Woman The Lego Movie

Perhaps having one of the busiest Comic-Con’s this year, it’s none other than Cobie Smulders. One minute she’s part of the huge Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, the next she’s moving over to DC (sort of) as Wonder Woman’s voice. Oh and her CBS show, HIMYM, officially announced it’s final season. Girlfriend is a hot commodity right now!

One big update on Lego Marvel Super Heroes and his name is Stan Lee. I don’t know if you’ve heard of him, but you might have. Check out what the guys over at IGN have to say about the Marvel mastermind’s involvement.
