ITGS: Avengers Assemble’s Chris Burns

We write a lot of articles here at Grizzly Bomb about TV shows, movies, comics… pretty much anything and everything entertainment related. But it’s always coming from our perspective, our point of view. So it is with great pleasure that I introduce to you the newest feature at GB, where we will take it to another level, and see it from a different perspective. Where he head… Inside The Grizzly Studio.

For the past few weeks I’ve been showing you one of my new favorite things, Avengers Assemble: The Series. You can check out some of the episodes here, here and here. Season 2 recently premiered over at avengersassembletheseries.com, and it was hilarious. Some of the cast were gracious enough to talk with us about the series and Season 2, which is where we’ll start off today.

Book Review – ‘Paul is Undead: The British Zombie Invasion’

In preparation for last week’s Paul McCartney concert at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit, Michigan, I picked up a copy of Alan Goldsher’s Paul is Undead: The British Zombie Invasion. Here’s the premise:

John, Paul, and George were…er…are zombies, with extraordinary powers like super strength and speed, mind control, and unprecedented musical ability. Ringo is a Seventh Level Ninja Lord. Together, they formed a band the likes the world had never seen: they eat their audiences, may or may not manipulate women, and sing some of the greatest rock and roll the world will ever know. All in the name of what John calls reaching the “Toppermost of the Poppermost”, which may or may not be a euphemism for taking over the world.

The style in which this piece of fiction is presented in much like a true biography would be, relying heavily on “interviews” with important people from the Beatles history, including Julia Lennon (who of course was reanimated by her son John), Mick Jagger (a cantankerous zombie hunter), and the all important “Fifth Beatle”, Sir George Martin (who opposed being turned undead).

The Jack Kirby Settlement…

On July 28 2011, in a New York court, Judge Coleen McMahon ruled a verdict on the copyright case of The Kirby Family, the plaintiffs and children of legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby, and Marvel/Disney, the defendant and legendary entertainment company. The Kirby family claimed that their father was integral in creating a majority of Marvel’s marquee characters-The Fantastic Four, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos, The X-Men and um, Spider-Man (I’m not joking). Moreover, since he was the primary creator of these characters, Kirby’s estate is entitled to the copyrights to these creations. After reviewing the case, as well as several testimonies from Marvel comics legends such as Stan Lee, his brother Larry Lieber (Stan Lee changed his name), John Romita Sr, Jim Steranko and others, as well as testimonies from close associates of the late Jack Kirby, such as writer Mark Evanier and Kirby collector John Morrow, McMahon ruled in favor of Marvel/Disney.

Marvel Comics Review: Uncannny X-men #541 (Fear Itself)

This is the fourth Fear Itself tie-in that I’ve bought since the Marvel event started, and I think it was probably my favorite. Now mind you – just because it was my favorite doesn’t mean the tie-ins or the core series of Fear Itself is all that good. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Fear Itself series when it started, but now it seems like it’s getting too impersonal and the heroes are still running around like idiots with no idea what is going on. It seemed at the end of the last issue that they were finally getting mobilized to strike back. And it also seems like the Worthy were just brought into the fray to give the heroes something to do in the tie-in comics. Which is fine in this case, because the Juggernaut is an old acquaintance of theirs.

So of course the Juggernaut, in his ‘Worthy’ form of The Breaker of Stone, picks San Francisco to trash and start raising anti-mutant sentiment. The X-Men decide to intervene and use the basic anti-Juggernaut tactic: Remove that silly ass helmet of his and have a telepath shut his mind down. This works up until the telepath shutting his mind down part,   where not even Emma Frost able to accomplish this. After defeating Hope Summers, a helmet-less Juggernaut trudges on… to go wreck some more shit.

I’ll be giving this issue a 4 out of 5 bears. It was exactly what you would expect out a tie-in to a major event. Plenty of action and more action. Greg Land’s always brilliant art helped push the rating up though I have to admit.

I’m actually wanting to get the next issue to see if the X-Men can stop the even more unstoppable Juggernaut. Is it even possible to be more unstoppable?

Marvel Comics Review: The Amazing Spiderman #666 – Spider Island Prelude

Well, the madness starts here and man was it good. The whole concept of Spider Island is seeing our favorite Wall Crawler contending with a whole city of regular people with Spider-Powers! Ridiculous right? But oh so fun! And unlike X-men Schism where I had no idea what I was getting except an eventual schism between the X-men, Spider Island delivers and I have to admit after hearing so much about Dan Slott- He is great at writing Spidey. Not to mention the $3.99 price tag was definitely worth how long the issue was, I wish every comic I bought lasted so long.

So the issue starts off with giving everybody, especially new readers I’m assuming, the low down on what’s going on in Spidey’s world and in particular in New York City. He’s balancing his life between his solo career, two Avengers teams and the Future Foundation (Fantastic Four). He is generally loved by the public and police for his assistance in the fight against crime and Mayor J. Jonah Jameson still hates his guts, branding him a menace. A move that by the way completely backfires on his approval ratings. Peter is also working at Horizon Labs, where constantly gets to make improvements to his spider suit and gadgets also while making a living. Peter is also getting karate lessons from Shang-Chi in his spare time (What spare time?), so the more I think about it, the more I see Spidey as becoming Batman with his gadgets and mastery of the martial arts.

Anywho, who shows up but our old friend the Jackal, who is of course up to his cloning shenanigans to the max and apparently behind the infestation of spider powered transmitting bed bugs we’ve heard so much about. But the bigger mystery is who the mysterious “benefactor” is behind the Jackal’s work. All I know is that she is red headed and her word bubbles are also red, but that really means nothing. So who is she? Madame Web? Mary Jane? I’m sure we’ll find out in due time.

Overall I have to give this issue and beginning of Spider Island a 5 out of 5 bears. After not having read a Spidey comic in so long it was great to pick up and read an issue that was worth the price in length and the quality of writing from Slott. I was really digging the art by Stefano Caselli. It has that cartoonish look but mixed with something in the caliber of Salvador Larocca whom I believe is the best artist in the business today. Keep it up Caselli! Can’t wait for the next part of Spider Island when things really kick into full gear.

Marvel Comics Review: X-men – Schism #2

Well that wasn’t a very long wait for the second issue of the X-men’s big event for the year. After last issue I was hoping that there was going to be some good action and extended Sentinel fight scenes. Instead we get to see numerous X-men mopping up malfunctioning Sentinels across the world. These Sentinels all turned on their masters of course due to the tampering of the newest Black King of the Hellfire Club, Kade Kilgore, who is twelve…. Yup. I just can’t get over that whole aspect of the story right now, that this little kid and now a couple of his little kid friends are involved in trying to take over the world or enslave mutants or something. I’m sure we’ll be finding out soon enough.

I was also a bit disappointed in the change of artist. Don’t get me wrong, I love Frank Cho’s art but it just felt awkward after Pacheco did such a fantastic job last issue. Wolverine was still great and I enjoy his and Idie’s moments, short though they may be. But overall nothing interesting really happened. I thought maybe Quentin Quire’s annoying ass may have posed a threat of some sort but they basically turned him into quite the joke by the end of the issue. Why wouldn’t Cyke just let Wolvie stab the little bastard?

I give the issue 1 out of 5 bears. What a waste. I’m not losing hope though, I will pick up issue three to see this thing through. Even if it’s bad at that point I might as well go to issue five also. I’m a trooper and I go down with the sinking ship!
