Screenshot of Klingon from ‘Star Trek 2’!

2009’s Star Trek did what many considered impossible, and that was to make Star Trek hip, fun and exciting for a general public. Now most nerds like me, (and the millions and millions of Trekkies out there), have always found Star Trek fun and exciting, but JJ Abrams shot some lifeblood into a series that was admittedly getting stale. Nemesis anyone? Yeah. So after the movie came out, was a huge hit critically and financially, we all expected a sequel, because Star Trek and sequels is just a given. And we waited. And waited. We bought the blu-ray, the crossover/tie-in comics, and we waited more, and nearly 4 years later, we’ve finally been given a small glimmer of the hope that we had from the first film the moment we popped in that DVD and fired up the deleted scenes.

Klingons.

To explain, the original cut of 2009’s Star Trek, had a scene where the villain, Nero, spends some time in a Klingon jail, and broods for years thinking of his revenge on Spock, because what else is an angry Romulan to do? It was a tease of a scene though, and we only got a glimpse of some of the Klingon helmets, which were evidently suited to accommodate their large forehead ridges.

Let’s just not mention the whole ridges/no ridges continuity/new continuity debacle ok?

So during the MTV Movie Awards, JJ Abrams was in some kind of skit, about something having to do with MTV, and I’m not sure what it was because I don’t watch MTV because I’m not a 14-22 year old brainless girl. Enterprisingly enough, (I know, I hate my puns too), JJ took it as an opportunity to hide in it a still of a Klingon from the NEW Star Trek movie, that is finally being developed. Here’s the skit, but you can skip to the still itself below, and nobody will judge you.

Hopefully we don’t have to wait much longer for more firm details on the movie, as right now everything is a guessing game, other than the presence of Klingons. Personally, I’m hoping for some sweet Gorn on Gorn action…

That’s what I’m talking about.

New Movie ‘Spring Breakers’ with Selena Gomez & Vanessa Hudgens [Updated]

I don’t mean to come off as misogynist or anything like that, but even if Harmony Korine’s new film Spring Breakers sucks royally (which it won’t), no one will dare hate the scantily clad former Disney chicks who carry the film. In these new, steamy pictures from the upcoming film, we get a look at what our heroines will hopefully be wearing for the duration of the film (AKA as little as possible).

My wife, Selena Gomez, stars in the film alongside Vanessa Hudgens. James Franco stars in the film as well, playing a drug dealer. I’m actually really interested in the content of this movie, but tossing in some scantily clad ladies won’t hurt either.

According to IMDb, the film follows:

“Brit, Candy, Cotty, and Faith have been best friends since grade school. They live together in a boring college dorm and are hungry for adventure. All they have to do is save enough money for spring break to get their shot at having some real fun. A serendipitous encounter with rapper “Alien” promises to provide the girls with all the thrill and excitement they could hope for. With the encouragement of their new friend, it soon becomes unclear how far the girls are willing to go to experience a spring break they will never forget.”

Pretty much sounds like the Harmony Korine we all know and love.

[EDITORS NOTE: Unlike my (obviously) young colleague, this movie does almost nothing for me. I don’t know these ‘Disney Chicks’, they all look like little kids to me. And as much as I love James Franco, this is not a movie that I would’ve even considered watching until about a minute ago, when I saw who else was in it. Heather Morris, who next to all the little girls in this movie, is a woman. Booyah.]

Louis CK and the Diceman to Star in Woody Allen Film

Woody Allen has always been known for his somewhat offbeat casting, as well as working with pretty much every actor in Hollywood, but today’s casting news regarding Allen’s next film is both long overdue, and completely surprising. Comedians Louis CK and Andrew Dice Clay are both set to star in Woody Allen’s next film. With no title or any plot details released, the only thing we know is that the cast will also include Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, and Peter Sarsgaard.

According to Film Drunk, Louis CK hired story editor, Susan E. Morse, a woman who used to work for Woody Allen. In an interview regarding the film, she had this to say:

“I think it would be absolutely great for those two guys to work together and to collaborate on some level. I think they would appreciate each other. They have different and similar personalities; it would be interesting to see them together. I think one of the things Woody would love about Louis would be the fact that there’s no way in hell Louis would be trying to “do Woody,” if he were to take on the “Woody Allen role” in a film. That was always an exasperating thing that would happen when people were trying to carry that lead role, they would often try to mimic Woody’s delivery, whereas he encouraged them to be themselves. He was always happier if they took whatever he wrote and put it in a vocabulary that was natural to them, rather than to say things literally, the way he had written them. Nothing was to be taken as though it was etched in stone.”

The casting of notoriously foul-mouthed Dice Clay is still a surprising turn of events, but considering Allen has worked with everyone from Owen Wilson to Alan Alda to Will Ferrell to even Leonardo DiCaprio, I’m sure he can make it work. Fresh off of winning an Oscar for his 2011 film Midnight In Paris, Allen’s next film, To Rome With Love, is set to be released on June 22nd of this year, but that hasn’t stopped Allen from getting right back to work on his 2013 film.

As for Louis CK, well, there’s no doubt that it’s going to spark comedic gold. Although 2009’s Whatever Works wasn’t Allen’s best film, there’s no question that Larry David’s committed performance wasn’t a near-perfect meeting of the minds. With that being said, I wish Allen would use CK for a more dramatic role, something I know he’s capable of. The 2000s gave fans of Allen two great dramas, Match Point and Cassandra’s Dream. I think it’d be pretty cool if Allen went against expectations and, instead of bringing a bunch of funny people together to do a comedy, he did a drama instead. Still, this probably won’t be the case and I’m excited for any collaboration between Allen and CK.

Grizzly Review: Prometheus (Spoiler Free)

Prometheus is a good Sci-Fi film with great acting and an interesting plot, but sadly it wasn’t a great Sci-Fi film and definitely wasn’t this generations Alien. But I would love to see a sequel which could easily fix the problems I found with this film. The best advice I can give to anyone going to see this film would be not to have your expectations to the level that the hype has put it.

Ridley Scott, director of Alien and Blade Runner, returns to the genre he helped define. With Prometheus, he creates a ground-breaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

To start off let’s talk about the acting. The acting was very professional and you could feel the emotion but the main flaw I found with the characters and the film in general were that you couldn’t connect with the people. The main character Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) was the exception to this with a realistic but strong character who survives at all costs (credit goes to her with a great performance). Sadly the characters you start to like get very little screen time and the one’s you don’t really care about (Charlie) get time that was more boring than interesting. Then there’s my main fault with this film. The crew don’t really mix very well and you get the feeling their all in their own little worlds, rather than experiencing something as a group. So in that respect it loses some of its authenticity.

Think I have moaned enough about the characters for now, so let’s talk about something more fun like the visuals. The special effects, physical props and visual landscape shots where both excellent viewing and brilliantly immersive to the universe that Ridley Scott’s created. There’s nothing quite like being four rows from the screen of an IMAX 3D showing of Prometheus and I would definitely recommend that experience. At one point the spaceship felt like it was landing two feet from your seat which was a little shocking because I have never sat that close at an IMAX. The best thing I felt about this films look was the way that the ships interiors and the alien building where all real and built in the Pinewood Studios which gave everything a realistic touch which helps to bring you closer to believing you’re in that world.

The plot is very much its own. If nothing else this film is not like any other and for that Ridley Scott has made a great addition to his Sci-Fi resume. My favorite scene without giving anything away would be the end scene of the film and if you have seen alien you will know why, but the other would probably be anything involving the Android David (Michael Fassbender) because he was such a great character and played brilliantly by Michael Fassbender who was being great as always. So if there is a sequel which after watching the film I would be expecting one, then I hope that they keep David but give him more face time and a better physical presence.

Finally I would like to address the question of whether Prometheus is a prequel to the Alien film. In my opinion it certainly was a prequel and the film does nothing but leave clues to the original films plot and origins. The end gives you the strongest connection to the original; they couldn’t have made that last scene more revealing to the alien origins if you saw the crew of the Nostromo land at the end. Simply put though this film needed to be more like alien and have a more structured and sensible plot that wouldn’t confuse viewers, I did feel that the film alienated (pure coincidence I used that word) people who wouldn’t get some of the more subtle and complicated plot strands. So go watch it because the film is a great viewing pleasure and will keep you thinking for a long time after about what happened.

The Dark Knight Rises: New Footage is Still Awesome, Despite MTV

The MTV Movie Awards, which were at least fun when I was younger, have become disgusting examples of what’s wrong with today’s society. Constantly rewarding stupidity over merit and making celebrities out of total tools. They even went so far as to award their ‘prestigious’ BEST MOVIE trophy to Twilight: Breaking Dawn…because they are stupid. That or MTV is confused about the meaning of the word ‘Best’.  To be honest, almost every show on MTV is that way – terrible. Occasionally though, you get a nugget of ‘awesome’ that will drop through. The most recent of these nuggets is the footage shown at the so-called “Award Show’ of the upcoming sure-to-be-a-masterpiece The Dark Knight Rises.

Apparently, as I just learned, it has been taken down, but you can watch the intro (and this one too) with Bale, Levitt, and Oldman.

New Trailer For “Starship Troopers: Invasion”

Starship Troopers has always been a polarizing franchise. The original Heinlein novel split readers down to whether or not it was pro or anti-fascism, or even a pro or anti-war novel. Even the titular 1997 adaptation saw its fair share of criticism for being mindless, overly gory and disrespectful of its source material, and alternatively being a cleverly made satire of fascism and militaristic jingoism disguised as a brainless action movie. (This years Battleship accomplishes the same feat, despite its source material being a damned board game.) Over the years however, Starship Troopers has developed into its own franchise, with it’s own set of sequels, albeit terrible ones. It was only a matter of time until someone decided to try to reclaim the franchise, and bring it back from straight to DVD hell in one way or another, and surprisingly, it has, this time in CGI form.

Wow. CGI Denise Richards looks different. Better? You decide.

That’s right, the film is being made entirely in CGI animation, by anime director Shinji Aramaki, who is known for his designs for mechs and powered exoskeletons for many anime series. This should ring a bell for fans of the novel, as the mechanized suits played a substantial role in the novel, and were unseen in the original film. However, the trailer indicates that it seems to directly pick it’s continuity from the first film, ignores it’s awful sequels, and furthers the direction of the original characters story, rather than reinterpreting and/or re-imagining a new adaptation of the book entirely.

It’s like a feature length videogame cutscene you can’t play!

The trailer shows Johnny Rico, who is now a battle hardened, eyepatch wearin’ , scarred roughneck, ready to rumble and barking out orders. We also see brief clips of soldiers attacking the bugs, ships flying, and a glimpse of the powered suits that the novel featured. The actual plot of the film takes place 10 years after the events of the Starship Troopers, and we see that Carl Jenkins, originally played by Neil Patrick Harris, has taken the Starship John A. Warden on a secret mission, and of course, ends up going missing. This leads to Rico sending off the Troopers on a rescue mission, where they’ll surely uncover new, horrifying and awesome bugs to kill. Also returning, is the character of Carmen, who was previously played by Denise Richards, and is now going to be joining Rico on the rescue mission, and possibly rekindling whatever broken romance she had with Rico from the first film.

How could you not love that face?

Some might think CGi is a strange direction to take for a sequel, but it’s not without precedent, as there was a mostly forgotten, and short lived CGI television series, called Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles, that skewed much closer in tone to the novel, than the film itself. However, this film seems to preserve the satirical spirit of the original film, with Troopers spouting out famous one liners, “C’mon you apes! You wanna live forever!”,  and even keeping the famously propagandistic  line, “Would you like to know more?”.

Behold! Paranormally gifted Col. Carl Jenkins! Previously played by Neil Patrick Harris! HAIL!

WIll they survive? Will they stop the bug menace once and for all? Will they make an entertaining and watchable film? It remains to be seen, as no hard release date has yet been confirmed, just a “Summer 2012”.  We’ll inform you as soon as there is more info, because we’re all sure that you Would Like To Know More!
