#6 – Countdown to Halloween: MONSTERS INC.

I have two things to say before I delve into this article.  Number one, I love Halloween.  I love the spooky creatures, the crisp air, the jack-o-lanterns, the candy.  Number two, I hate horror films.  I really, really do.  I was one of those kids that had nightmares from anything scarier than a Goosebumps book.  Even in adulthood, the films are either too scary and the images haunt me for months, or too cheesy which just bores me.  I’m the weirdo watching the History Channel specials about werewolves or reading Dracula for the 254,235th time.  (A brief side note: if they ever decide to make a decent film adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel, I would most likely love it.)

#8 – Countdown to Halloween: SLITHER

Slither is a fun ’80s throwback gross-out horror flick starring Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Rooker. It was written and directed by James Gunn (Super, Lollipop Chainsaw). The story is about a malevolent alien parasite that crash lands in the town of Woodsville. Grant (Rooker) gets infected while romping in the bushes with Brenda (Brenda James) and then begins eating local pets like it’s going out of style while slowly changing into a hideous slug monster.

TV’s Fairy Tale Fall Brawl Round One: ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” Pilot

Fairy Tale stories seem to be all the rage these days on TV, with ABC premiering Once Upon a Time tonight and Grimm kicking off over on NBC this Friday.  Here at Grizzly Bomb, we offer to keep you abreast of the goings on of these two very similar stories, offer our ever witty commentary, and complete coverage on what I like to call:

TV’S FAIRY TALE FALL BRAWL!!!

(Cue Boxing bell ding)

In one corner, we have ABC’s Once Upon a Time.  The Sunday night slot isn’t too shabby for a new show, sandwiched between AFV and Desperate Housewives (which I understand are shows that people are still watching).  The show is the new project of the makers of Lost, which gets my intrigue juices flowing.  However, the seemingly cheesy storyline and the far-fetched premise make it seem out of touch with an inability to relate to the average human being.  Could this show make it on clout and reputation alone?

On the other corner, we have NBC’s Grimm.  Produced by the same people who worked on Buffy and Angel (not Joss Whedon), it clearly looks like the better show.  The story focuses around Nick Burckhardt, a homicide detective who can see fairy tale characters.  I have high hopes for this one, however, there are a few things working ominously against it.

  1. It may have trouble settling on an audience depending on how they play it.  I don’t know many men that love fairy tales, and I don’t know many women that love gore.  The smart thing to do, considering ABC has got the fluffy fairy tale thing covered, is to outright target a male audience.  The trailers at first seemed to be focusing on creatures that are ugly and murderous, but lately they’ve been shots of dead princesses.  They may be tempted to straddle that line, and it may end up working for them, but it also may not.
  2. The time slot sucks.  Friday night is where prime time goes to die, with very few exceptions to this rule.  Not to mention, it’s competing for air time with Fringe, which is going to be a tough competitor.
  3. NBC has put out some real stinkers lately.  Their show cancellation count is already up to two, and it’s only October.  Also, Grimm was already pushed back once.  Not a good sign for movies, not a good sign for television.

Back to the brawl…

Review: Ringer Episode 6 – “The Poor Kids Do It Everyday”

The lies!  The danger!  The blood!  All new episode of Ringer tonight, and I’m here to offer my commentary.

Last week, we were given a few bombshells.  Clearly, Gemma was less than excited about finding out Siobhan’s true identity.  In fact, she was downright livid.  Who knew she would react this way, right?  So what’s the first thing a hurt female does with brand new, juicy information?  Well they blackmail people, of course.  Gemma thinks that forcing Bridget to sleep with Henry and catching them in the act is the best way to go in order to get all the spoils after the divorce.  Bridget, the former stripper, is above whoring herself out and instead offers Gemma something even better: to be Best Friends Forever.  Bridget then presents the friendship bracelets she was up all night making.

#15 – Countdown to Halloween: FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD

To me, there is no greater cinematic guilty pleasure than a Slasher Flick- poorly written, poorly acted; rife with nudity and over the top low budgetspecial effects- all of which revolves around the true star of the film-the killer. The killer, usually referred to as a “Slasher” is one of the great cinematic inventions of the 20th century, a cold, unfeeling psychopath with little or no motive or character development, that is tactically brilliant, innovative and typically a physical powerhouse-even if not in stature.

Review: ‘Ringer’ Episode 4 – “It’s Gonna Kill Me, But I’ll Do It”

Happy Tuesday, faithful readers!  The plot thickens and the story unravels this week on Ringer; and Buffy slays me again.  If you remember, I had some harsh critiques on the show when it premiered.  I wasn’t sure Sarah Michelle Gellar had the chops to carry her Sister Act; and equally feared that the writing would lack originality and interest.  While I’m still not entirely convinced that the show will go the distance, and I’m not holding my breath for any serious awards, I will say that it holds my attention for one hour per week.  Which is more than I can say for most things.  Or people.
