Weird & Wacky World of Comics: Christmas Special!

So December is here and whether you celebrate Christmas or not, it is hard to avoid the tell tale signs of the coming festive season. Shops are cram-packed with tons of Christmas related items and ads about the holiday season spring up every few seconds. The comic industry is not one to shy away from this either and churns out a selection of festive comics for young and old, sometimes with some very strange results. So in this special edition of Weird and Wacky World of Comics we celebrate the strange, the wonderful and the just plain disturbing Christmas comics in the gallery below. You never know it may give you some ideas to pop on your Christmas or it may be an alternative to watching constant Christmas adverts flash by your eyes. Either way it is certainly a better alternative than watching some of the rubbish that gets put on during the holiday season!

GB Christmas Special: Knock Off Toys 2013

Last year I did an article showcasing some of the best knock off toys on the market. Now this may seem strange to have a best knock off toy, with the term knock off implying that the toy itself is not going to be of the standard you would think. But some of these figures are just plain genius in their design while others are so bad, they need to be showcased around toy stores so people are aware of some of the rubbish that can filter on to shelves if shop suppliers are not vigilant. So this year I decided to do the exact same thing, because it is entertaining to see just what new knock of toys have come out in a year. So without further ado, here are some of the best and worst toys out there. If you ever see these toys in a toys shop then you are really in a bad toy store!

These toy examples came from Pleated Jeans which amassed a whole selection of really bad toys. The worst has to be a toss up between Superman on a horse (?) figure or the truly awful Chewbacca figure.

The next batch of slightly shoddy toys (from numerous websites listed below) all seem to be based on recognizable characters from film and TV screens. It is always fun to watch Bugs Bunny advertise the slightly embarrassed looking Munsters toys and there are many more awful toys that follow. My personal favorite out of these is the cartoon style jigsaw puzzle based on Tim Burton’s Batman. As a child I would have done this and as a man-child I am still quite tempted. The Judge Dredd-ful toy is inspired as well.

Then we are left with the odds and ends and also the end of this article. To end, we have a return from our old friend, Robert Cop. The internet is full of these kind of galleries and if you dig deep you will find a wide range of rubbish to pour over. So until next year have a great celebration and see you in the New Year with more knock off toys!

The World of the Homemade – Homemade Horror

Grizzly Bomb loves to showcase up and coming creators and in this new section called The World of the Homemade we highlight some of the pioneers of the low-budget and hand-crafted world of entertainment and collectables. This week focuses on creator and artist Gabe LaPeer. In 2011 Gabe created a small company called Homemade Horror and since then the project has expanded to an online store on Storenvy and a Facebook Page with exclusive updates and give-away prizes.

Zombie Cheerleaders Arrive in All Cheerleaders Die Movie

It was only a matter of time before the zombie genre turned its attention to Cheerleaders. Horror films set in schools are certainly not a new concept and zombies invading schools even less so, with films like Zombie High School, Boy Eats Girl and Dance of the Dead all covering similar ground. But the new film by directors Lucky McKee and Chris Siverston puts its own spin on the genre, mixing elements of witchcraft and revenge into your standard gut munching. If the title sounds familiar then you may have caught this title’s original release in 2001 – the upcoming 2014 film is a remake by the same team.

The synopsis, courtesy of Dread Central:

“When tragedy rocks Blackfoot High, rebellious outsider Mäddy Killian shocks the student body by joining the cheerleading squad. This decision drives a rift between Mäddy and her ex-girlfriend Leena Miller – a loner who claims to practice the dark arts. After a confrontation with the football team, Mäddy and her new cheerleader friends are sent on a supernatural roller coaster ride which leaves a path of destruction none of them may be able to escape.”

The trailer’s a bit of a slow burner. It starts out along the lines of most teen horror movies (There are very clear shades of I Know What You Did Last Summer in there) but after time and repeated viewings it actually looks pretty cool. It’s doubtful the movie will be anything mind-blowing but the fun factor certainly seems present. Little comedy scenes like the poor cat getting killed, mixed with some interesting looking attack scenes (The women all seem to have super strength so we get those great shots of people getting flung about all over the place) offer a lot of potential. Also everyone seems to be having fun with the format and so far the cast don’t instantly make me want to rip my hair out. There is a nice mix of dark humor and horror which could confuse people who don’t know what they’re getting into, but some of the best horror flicks have this combination (American Werewolf in London, Slither) and when done right it can pay off in spades. The filmmakers seem to be pretty with it and it looks like All Cheerleaders Die has a bit more wit to it than your mindless zombies movie. It’s just hard to tell from the trailer alone if this will hold up through the whole film, or if it’ll turn into the same old brain eater flick by the end. This is one to tentatively look out for in 2014.
