American Psycho Possibly Getting the TV Treatment with FX

Serial killers seem to be fast becoming the new zombie for entertainment fans. As well as having Dexter, Bates Motel, and Hannibal we now have the return of a character that was thoughtful enough to give musical advice while murdering his victims. Yes Patrick Bateman may be making a return in a televised series of American Psycho. Planned for FX, it has Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) producing and Stefan Jaworski (Those Who Kill) behind it as writer.

For people unaware of Mr. Bateman (and who have been living under a rock since 1991) he is a yuppie executive who in his spare time murders his colleagues and any one he becomes annoyed with. The book American Psycho, where Patrick is first unleashed into the world (he does appear in a very brief scene in The Rules of Attraction novel), came from the brilliant mind of Bret Easton Ellis, and was turned into a movie starring former Batman, Christina Bale, who gives a stunningly mental performance.

It seems in this updated version (which follows on from the movies and novel), Bateman is now in his 50s and has taken on a protegé to help him in a sick social experiment which will hopefully create a new generation of psychos just like him. Sounds promising and if this is crafted as well as the Hannibal series, it should be superb. A big part of what makes Hannibal great is knowing who the killer is and watching him twist the cast around his fingers. We would guess that American Psycho is probably going to take this route as well. It would be difficult to mold him as the likable psycho like we’ve seen in Dexter, because he really is a bit of an unlikable chap. In the movie, though everyone he meets loves him until the moment he snaps in front of them. If it involves a protégé then his manipulation of people Patrick has will definitely come into play.

No casting news as of yet but the serial killer role is going to be a tough one to fill. TV psychos tend to be more charming and sophisticated with just a hint of menace behind their eyes. It is unlikely that Christian Bale is going to reprise his role as Patrick so the casting of this role is going to be crucial in the audience accepting this new series and character.

The only downside is that first impressions of the book and the movie were you did not actually know if Patrick was a killer or not. The scenes of murder that we see him witness are all discredited by the end and certainly make you wonder if it is all in his head. The ambiguous nature of this ending really appealed to me. However, the existence of a series with a protégé seems to confirm it will not be in his head, unless it is later revealed to all be imagined. That is the great thing about entertainment though, how differently each person interprets the material in front of them. TV interpretations of popular characters from books and film have been incredible as of late and very well scripted pieces. Here is hoping American Psycho can do the same as the many shows before it. If it can it should make for some fantastic television.

Adam Thompson: Artist Draws a Superhero a Day for 50 Days

It is hard not to love hearing these types of stories. The story involves one Adam Thompson, an artist who decided he wanted to improve his skills on Adobe Illustrator and he gave himself quite an inventive way of doing it.

He decided that for the next 50 days he would create, in his own style, a hero. Called 50 Heroes in 50 Days he managed to produce some of the most innovative designs of well-known heroes that the fandom collective have ever seen. Here is what the man himself had to say about his gallery of heroic heroes.
“As the title indicates, each day for 50 days I drew a new superhero in Adobe Illustrator. In doing so I learned many new shortcuts and tools, and ultimately made myself more efficient in the program.  This project was incredibly fun for me. As an illustrator I am inspired by comics, this project allowed me to pay extra close attention to the details of each character, and gain a greater understanding of what goes into character development. I hope to do a villains series in the future, so keep an eye out, and as always, enjoy!”
Now the villains series certainly sounds like it will have promise after such a good job he did on the heroes.  What is so great about these designs is their unique style, making the heroes cute-a-fied while sticking to their superhero roots. The pill shaped body also adds a certain continuity to them that is something to be admired. A lot of the designs are from the film versions of these characters, but the comic designs pop up as well (look out for super cute Agent Coulson!). So enjoy the pictures below and if we keep our fingers crossed we will see more of these in the near future. Mr. Thompson, if you are reading this, these pictures would look great in a book.

Below are some of our favorites…

Star Wars: Rumors Swirl Around Stand-Alone Movies for Han, Yoda, & Boba Fett…

We have known for a while that starting in 2015 Disney plans to release a new Star Wars movie each year, alternating between the new series and stand alone character based movies. We now have confirmation that these movies will be origin stories. Disney’s chief financial officer Jay Rasulo announced during a presentation to financial investors that the intermittent installments would play host to the origins of some of the best-loved characters from the franchise.

Variety broke the story yesterday afternoon stating that Rasulo sees it as “the sky’s the limit”  for the for the sci-fi franchise, including expanding its presence in the company’s theme parks. “There’s incredible flexibility. It’s an unbelievable palette to create from.”

Rasulo also confirmed that from 2015 one Star Wars trilogy film or origin story film would also appear on the release schedule, starting with the seventh installment in the Star Wars saga directed by J.J. Abrams. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg were previously rumored to have been hired to write the second and third installments, with Michael Arndt already scripting Star Wars Episode VII, however it is now confirmed the Kasdan and Kinberg will be writing the stand-alone origin movies.

Any Star Wars fan that knows his salt is aware that Kasdan is no new-comer to the saga, having written, in my opinion the best installment, Empire Strikes Back and having an eye in on Return of The Jedi. Aint It Cool News  reported a little while back that one of the stand alone films would focus on Yoda, and Bleeding Cool recently reported that there was also talks of Han Solo and Boba Fett movies with a casting call already out for a young Han. It remains to be seen if Han Solo and Boba Fett would get separate movies or have share the screen. We already know that Harrison Ford and the rest of the central Star Wars cast will be reprising their roles, but this would be the first sign that Disney is looking to recast characters from the original trilogy for the new movies. Granted Harrison Ford is too old to play a young, agile Solo, but this is certainly a piece of casting Disney will need to get right.

It would be great to see two of the best characters from the saga face off against each other. I fear for fanboys the world over whose heads would explode in excitement!

Dredd Sequel: Official Comic Book and Campaign for a Movie Follow Up!

Judge Dredd Magazine Prog 340 will feature a story that’s set directly after Dredd 3D. The story which is being billed as a sequel to the hugely entertaining movie (which starred Karl Urban as a pitch perfect Judge Dredd) will match with film’s visual design, continuity and characters.

What’s happening with that movie sequel we talked about though? Well, over on Facebook there has been a petition started to get one off of the ground. The petition is being supported by Judge Dredd licensees, 2000AD, and Rebellion who all fully back the project. An email was sent out to all 80,000 supporters of the project this week calling for a day of action next Wednesday. In order to show that there is a demand for more Dredd, the campaign is asking that you either buy a copy of the DVD or Blu-ray, if you already own one buy it for a friend, or watch the movie through an on demand service such as Netflix, which it is currently in the top 10 on!

The email that was sent to supporters contained the following information:

[box_light] Thank you – you’re one of more than 80,000 people have now signed the petition calling for a sequel to DREDD! The response to the petition has been just incredible and the endorsement of the owners of Judge Dredd, 2000 AD and Rebellion, has seen the numbers surpass everyone’s expectations.

But we still need your help!

On 18th September, we’re encouraging everyone to take part in a massive DREDD SEQUEL DAY OF ACTION – we’ve already made the money men who could get behind a sequel sit up and take notice by consistently keeping the DVD and Blu-Ray in the charts on Amazon and now on Netflix.

We’re asking everyone who’s signed the petition to come together next Wednesday and drive DREDD back up the charts – if everyone who’s signed the petition bought an extra DVD or Blu-Ray (either for themselves or as a present for a friend) or rented/bought it on iTunes and Netflix it will send the loudest signal yet that WE WANT MORE DREDD!

So spread the word that on Wednesday 18th September, you’re going to bring DREDD back into the public eye! Plus, it’s the day that the new comic book sequel comes out, with lots of media attention planned for this and the campaign.

Thanks to Rebellion for helping put this newsletter together – we’re also really pleased to reveal that the official T-shirt for the campaign is now available, so you can wear your support with pride!

So, you ready?

DON’T FORGET – if you unsubscribe from the petition your name will no longer appear in the list of those calling for a sequel!

Stay subscribed and you’ll get occasional updates about how the campaign is doing as well as any major news about a potential sequel – we promise we won’t spam you or pass your details on to any other company.

And don’t forget to encourage all your friends and family to sign up to at Dredd Sequel Campaign

Available to buy NOW – this is the only OFFICIAL ‘Make a DREDD sequel’ campaign T-shirt!

Available in multiple sizes, wear it and let everyone know you support the campaign!  [/box_light]

We’re huge fans of Dredd here at G-Bomb. It captured the essence of the character and had a basic, but effective storyline that really embedded us in the world Dredd inhabits. The changes made to the costume and designs were all solid, overall it was loyal the source material without being a carbon copy. Afterall, how the Hell can a man be so dexterous and athletic with a bloody eagle strapped to his shoulder?

Screen writer Alex Garland has spoken before at how he would like to expand and widen his take on Judge Dredd and Mega City One. Also, the thought of having Judge Death in a movie to me is exciting as Batman taking on Superman.

Dredd campaign

To sign up to the petition head over to the 200oAD site, and don’t forget to follow the campaign on Facebook too. Next Wednesday I will be watching Dredd on Netflix to show my support, make sure you do the same! I may even get a t-shirt.

Movie News Roundup! New Godzilla Revealed, Transformers 4 Poster Arrives & New Release Date for Ant-Man Movie!

There has been a ton of movie news recently, so much so in fact that we at Grizzly Bomb decided to combine some of the news for an easy to digest package. First off is the news that finally an image of the new Godzilla has come online. Due to be released in 2014, we have had quite a few teaser shots of him (the most notable showing his scaly tail), but now we get to see his actual head (originally from Yahoo Movies).

Now this reviewer is not entirely up to speed on the Godzilla mythology having (to my shame) seen only a few brief clips of the movie franchise itself. But from what I have seen from this poster is that the design is very much akin to the older, original Godzilla than the more heroic faced hero he later became and it certainly does not look anything like the first American remake of the creature. There is also a great amount of detail that has gone into the facial design and to be quite honest it is looking pretty darn awesome. Keep checking with Grizzly Bomb for more information as it arrives.

So from a film this reviewer knew nothing about to a film that quite a few people will wish they knew nothing about, the new Transformers movie Transformers 4: Age of Extinction. Now the franchise does have its fans but for a lot of people, Michael Bay’s explode-a-rama of guns, robots and CGI has ruined the fun of Transformers and has become a parody of the action genre. That being said, this film does appear to be trying to sort the previous films problems out and take the movie in a new direction with Mark Walhberg starring and Bay teasing the inclusion of the fan favorites the Dinobots (check out the link here). The new poster release seems to be doing the same thing with a rather restrained image (originally from Inside Movies).

There is plenty we can take from this poster. For a start who is facing extinction? The sand covered logo is clearly a warped Decepticon badge so are they the ones who are going to be deleted or are they the ones doing the exterminating? With the possible inclusion of the Dinobots, are they the ones in charge of the coming devastation? If so that would be great to hear Grimlock shouting when he is about to crush a Decepticon. Or could it even be the human race that is on the chopping block? Hopefully more will be revealed before its release on June 27th, 2014.

Finally, we nip over to Marvel who have tons of new work in the pipeline but for now, its focus has gone back to a film that keeps popping its little head up every few months, Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man movie (thanks to Hollywood Reporter for the information). Looks like Marvel may be worried about the competition from the recently released news that Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig’s new Bond film because they have changed their original release date of November 6th 2015 (the same month the new Bond film is coming out) to July 31st 2015 (only one release for that month and it’s Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars). It does mean superhero fans will not have long to wait for their hero fix and will be jumping head first into Phase 3. With Avengers: Age of Ultron scheduled for May 1st 2015 and the untitled DC team up of Batman and Superman coming July 17th 2015, it seems the summer of 2015 will be chocker block full of heroes.
