For anyone who is yet sold on the new Conan movie, prepare to be. What follows is a clip, just under 3 minutes long, that show even as a kid, Conan was the baddest mother on the block…
Go ahead. Tell me that wasn’t sweet.

Go ahead. Tell me that wasn’t sweet.
Back in May I told you about the next Tarantino movie – Django Unchained. At that time it was believed that Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) was already locked in, and that it was rumored that star of the original movie Django – Franco Nero, would also be asked to take part. In addition, everyone just assumed that Sam Jackson would appear in his 6th Tarantino scripted movie.
Well as the production has rounded out, we’ve gotten some more names, the biggest of which was probably Leonardo DiCaprio. For the last month or so rumors have circled around DiCaprio being pegged to play the film’s villain – Calvin Candie…
“a charming but ruthless proprietor of Candyland, a despicable club and plantation in Mississippi where female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in “mandingo” style death matches. Candie is a slave’s worst nightmare and the freed slave Django must cross him in order to reclaim his wife.”
– Deadline
And while Leo’s name is attached to this all over the place, as far as I can figure, it isn’t actually official yet. If it does happen though, I think DiCaprio would be great. I’d love to see him in a villain role, and he has a real desire to work with the best directors in the industry with all the Scorsese movies in recent years, and Christopher Nolan’s Inception last summer. This guy is, in my opinion, one of the top actors in Hollywood today. As DeNiro, Pacino, Hackman, and Hoffman all ease into ‘Grandpa Roles’, the next generation of great actors is really starting to emerge, and Leo is at the forefront. However, like I said, he’s not confirmed yet to my knowledge.
Another big name QT was trying to wrangle in for the project was Mr. Blockbuster himself – Will Smith. This was the focus of our article in May, and now we’ve got an answer from the Fresh Prince: No.
So, once Will Smith (against the advice of everyone) turned down the lead in Quentin Tarantino’s newest movie, the search for ‘Django’ began anew. With Smith out, QT reportedly talked to Idris Elba, Terrence Howard, and Chris Tucker all before ultimately offering the role to Smith’s Ali co-star; Jamie Foxx, who has accepted.
Foxx is coming off of an extremely entertaining role in Horrible Bosses (which was awesome), where he played a character named ‘Motherf#*ker Jones’ and will now play a freed slave out for revenge. This should prove to be Foxx’s most talked about role of since Ray.
In addition to Jamie Foxx, it’s recently been announced that Kevin Costner will also join the cast. That means that Costner should be slated for a huge year in 2012 between this and his role as Pa Kent in Man of Steel. According to Deadline, Costner will play ‘Ace Woody’, the wicked plantation underboss who trains slaves to fight to the death.
Jamie Foxx’s Ray co-star Kerry Washington has also been tapped to appear as Django’s wife, and the motivation for his entire drive in the movie.
In addition, if you can believe the “always dependable” IMDb, Treat Williams (who we mentioned back in May) and Keith Carradine are both in the running to be included as well. Carradine is of course the younger brother of David Carradine, who was best known to QT fans as ‘Bill’. Now, while I’m pretty impartial towards Williams (even though I loved ‘Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead’), I really liked Carradine in his run on Dexter and I think he’d be a really under-rated addition to what’s shaping up to be one of the best casts of 2012…
The cast for The Bourne Legacy continues to grow, and it just got better. After the additions of Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz, now comes word from IGN, that Ed Norton is in talks to play the role of villain in the Bourne ‘spin off’:
Edward Norton is up for the villain role opposite Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz in The Bourne Legacy.
As Variety reports, “Plot details are being kept under wraps but what is known is that Jason Bourne will not be featured in this film and that Renner will play another assassin trained in the same program that Bourne was trained who goes out to find his true identity. Universal had no comment on Norton’s negotiation.”
Cast is shaping up, what do you think? Are you down for a Bourne movie with no Damon?
In the lull of summer comedy series, I think I have stumbled upon a very promising series known as Misfits, which has already received the BAFTA Television Award.
This story revolves around a young set of delinquents serving community service, who find themselves in the midst of a freak lightning/Hail storm. Once struck by lightning the group’s probation officer goes insane with rage and attempts to kill them all. But in the midst of all this chaos they discover that they have developed superhuman abilities and kill their probation officer. Drama quickly ensues as each learns to cope with their abilities.
As cliché as the story arc is, the delectable palette of characters are what makes the series phenomenal. More notable characters such as Nathan Young (Robert Sheehan), an outspoken prick that puts Corey Feldman’s character ‘Mouth’ to shame, and Simon Bellamy (Iwan Rheon) who plays a socially crippled loner, make this dark comedy exactly what it is, genius.
And when it comes to Dark Comedy, Misfits delivers! Creator/Writer Howard Overman leaves nothing sacred, as the cast engages in everything from drug use to granny sex in a South Park style of comedy.
There are currently 2 seasons of Misfits, the first of which is on available on Hulu, whilst the ‘Second Season/Christmas Special’ are currently streaming on various websites. There has been confirmed filming of the third season, consisting of the original cast minus Robert Sheehan, who is pursuing other career opportunities, and looks very promising.

I’m just going to come out and say it: will everyone involved in this project please just pack it up and walk away from the whole thing? From the inability to cast two lead roles even from the likes of Keanu Reeves to the switching of directors, now there is the announcement of a budget cut of about 50 million bucks. Not that budgets make a movie, but with all of the problems combined this project is heading for nothing but trouble if it ever indeed gets off the ground.
Here’s the latest from IGN:
Variety has the report, adding that the project has been reconfigured as a $90 million tent pole. That’s down quite a bit from the previously reported $140 million budget.
But that’s part of why Collet-Serra has been brought in, as he apparently has a reputation for turning in money-makers on tight budgets (see also his House of Wax remake and the recent Liam Neeson thriller Unknown).
As for Collet-Serra being the new director, I didn’t mind Orphan and House of Wax, but I have yet to see Unknown. This movie would definitely be his big break after Unknown, but quite frankly I wouldn’t care if they cast this movie into the destroying hands of Uwe Boll. As I discussed with a colleague the other day, I think Akira might be better as a CG movie instead of animated. And at the rate the live-action movie is going that may be coming true sooner than we think.
