Review: Smallville – Season 10/Series Finale

It took a few minutes to sink in before I realized that it was the last time I would hear the Smallville theme song playing at the beginning of a new episode because tonight it happened: the series finale. I’ve been with the show many years, through the highs and the lows. Of course there were going to be terrible episodes I would despise over the course of the show and certain directions they took continuity that I don’t agree with but Smallville still remains one of my favorite shows of all time after ten seasons.

The episode opens with Chloe telling a child a story and then flashes back seven years earlier with Apokolips inexorably heading towards Earth…then the typical commercial break and theme song opening as I wait in anticipation!

DC Movie Updates: Green Lantern, The Dark Knight Rises, & Superman: Man of Steel

With so much news to talk about lately, we decided to split the updates up, so if you missed the Marvel Avengers edition you can click here. Still a lot of Marvel to cover, but I think it’s time to talk about some upcoming DC movies. Let’s get this started.

Starting off the Trinity of DC movies hitting us soon is Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, Mark Strong as SinestroBlake Lively as Carol Ferris, and Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond.

Now I think it’s safe to say a lot of people were impressed when we saw the 5 minute WonderCon footage earlier this year. Over at Newsarama they have an interesting read on why they believe this footage rocked fandom.

Next we’ll take a look at the latest TV Spot which doesn’t show a whole lot of footage, but is still pretty effective, as well as being quite revealing regarding story and potential SPOILERS:

They show a whole lot of Parallax is what I’m saying. And now we move on to the picture portion of our program. No joke, get ready for posters, and lots of them.

From SuperHeroHype we get a look at Hal’s CG costume in great detail:

Grizzly Graphic Novel Review – Superman: Earth One

One of the review excerpts in an advertisement for Superman: Earth One quoted it as “What do you get when you combine Twilight and a classic superhero? The new Superman”, and I’ve come to the decision that those words are stupid.

I would lean more towards saying it’s like Smallville minus the five seasons of high school and college nonsense. It’s actually better though not to compare it to anything else, because it is simply a re-imagining of the Superman mythos. Much as Grant Morrison’s All Star Superman was. The story was written by veteran J. Michael Straczynski.

Kneel Before Zod! – Michael Shannon Cast as the New Superman Villain

Kneel before Michael Shannon!

It would appear Viggo Mortensen is out of the running to play Zod, because Michael Shannon of recent Boardwalk Empire fame, has landed the job to portray the baddest Kryptonian of all. According to a report from Yahoo!, Director Zack Snyder had this to say of Zod and Michael Shannon:

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t,” Snyder said in a statement to Deadline, which was first to report the superhero casting news. “Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

Michael Shannon, who is also an Academy Award nominee for his turn in Revolutionary Road, can definitely play a sinister role. His character Nelson Van Alden in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire is calm and collected, but prone to outbursts of rage from time to time. It would seem with Shannon’s addition to the cast of Superman: Man of Steel, they have an all star lineup going. Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams and Henry Cavill round out the rest of the cast of the Man of Steel. Now the only thing to wait on is the casting of all the minor roles for the movie, assuming they’ll cast Jimmy Olsen and Perry White. And who could forget Zod’s cuddly Kryptonian minions Ursa and Non. I vote for the WWE’s Kane to fill the role of Non if he is in the movie!

Aquaman + Geoff Johns = Winning

It’s a well known fact that Geoff Johns is the ‘King Midas’ of the DC universe.

He has the ability to turn a certain title that may have a casual readership, into something worthwhile for fans both old and new. There aren’t many characters in the DCU that Johns hasn’t written. He literally resurrected Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern title in Green Lantern: Rebirth, and has done the same with The Flash in Flash: Rebirth.

The guy is comic book gold!

After writing characters such as Superman, Flash and Green Lantern in some of the finest stories I’ve had the opportunity to read, Geoff Johns is now set to write another superhero back into prominence; Aquaman. According to an article over at IGN, Johns will begin writing Aquaman’s story after Brightest Day is finished.

There has been no artist announced thus far so let the speculation begin. I’d like to see a Geoff Johns and Jim Lee team up myself!

I think this will be a great thing to revitalize Aquaman, though the buzz currently going around is that the dweller of the depths has been pretty badass as of late in Brightest Day. As always, we will keep you posted on all developments with Geoff Johns and Aquaman.

Sound off below on what you think of the news!
