Dexter: 8.06 – “A Little Reflection”

A Little Reflection was yet another disappointing episode in this final season of Dexter. On paper, this sounds like it could be an interesting episode. For instance, Dexter takes on an “intern”; the boy he was going to kill, Zach Hamilton. Last episode we got to meet Zach for the first time and you could tell right away that he was bad news. In this episode, we found out that he is in fact a killer and a psychopath, so much so that he is being seen by Dr. Vogel. This obviously was not a surprise.

Dexter Zach Hamilton

Vogel suggested that she and Dexter teach Zach “the code”. What the hell is Vogel’s deal?! Let’s take this guy who’s already killed an innocent woman, who is drawn to the blood like Dexter, and who was going to kill his father, and give him a set of rules to live by. If Dexter has this much trouble following his own code, what do you think will happen when this kid is told it’s okay to kill?! Zach pulled on Dexter’s heartstrings when he said he was killing to protect his mother… something Dexter has always wished he could have done. This seems like another situation like Miguel Prado or Lila; where Dexter lets them know who he is, they kill someone innocent, and then Dexter kills them. Only this time, we know little to nothing about the killer in question. Yawn.

dexter deb

There is something unsettling about Deb being fine suddenly. She was psychotic and tried to kill Dexter and herself, and now she is like regular old Deb. She keeps saying she has PTSD, but you can’t just shut off PTSD merely because you want everything to be like it used to be. She has just decided to let Dexter be Dexter.

I don’t even care that Hannah McKay is back. Like… at all. I cared so little about her when the whole season (7) revolved around her, it is obvious why I cannot muster up an ounce of give-a-shit now that she is back. We’ll see what happens, but I suspect I will continue to feel disinterested. I feel no connection to most of the characters. I feel little connection to Dexter anymore, as he just comes off as tired and aging.

Dexter Hannah McKay

I don’t know what to say, really, other than hopefully this show gets better. Unless I see some wicked action in the next few episodes, I will be horribly disappointed with the final season of a show that should have ended after season 4. It can never get any better than Trinity! Speaking of which… did Astor & Cody die or something? Where the hell have they been?

I give this episode a 1/5.

[Ed. Note – Just want to say, despite the show spiraling into mediocrity, I really enjoy that Dora Madison Burge is here.]

Breaking Bad Trailer Sets the Inevitable Tone

There is less than a week till the final eight episodes of one of the greatest shows in television history. Breaking Bad is by far my favorite drama ever made and it is kind of crazy to think a simple 71 second trailer could get me more excited… but it has. Forgoing scenes from the episodes, we instead get a brooding Walter White’s voice, setting the inevitable, dark and twisted tone that will ensue. Check out the Breaking Bad trailer below.

The poem that Walter White (Bryan Cranston), reads is Ozymandias, which if you didn’t get from the trailer, talks about the eventual decline of all leaders. That could give us a good taste of what we can expect for Walt as we near the end.

Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

– Percy Bysshe, 1818

When we got a flash forward with the gun in his trunk, I don’t think anyone thought he was getting away scot-free. Even more, Vince Gilligan, the show runner, has compared Walt to Scarface multiple times in interviews, so could that mean he could face the same fate. All that said, the more mysterious question on my mind is how is Hank’s reaction to the news going to last 8 episodes. That will be a tricky one for the writers, but if I trust anyone, it would be the writers of Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad returns for its final 8 episodes on August 11, and if you haven’t caught up or haven’t seen any episodes, buy a Netflix account right now, and marathon the hell out of them. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Doctor Who Has a New Time Lord! Peter Capaldi is the Twelfth Doctor!

The British population has had cause to celebrate recently with a new baby joining the royal blood line. But the only event Whovians have been waiting to celebrate is the regeneration of our favorite time lord. Matt Smith is standing down from playing The Doctor, and for the last few weeks fans have sat staring at their computer screens waiting for the day when the new actor or actress who will play The Doctor will be revealed. Even we here at Grizzly Bomb had our own guesses as to who the 12th Doctor might be. Just a few hours before the show aired, we got a sneak peek into the gender of The Doctor. The Mirror reported that celebrity photographer Rankin let it slip with the below tweet that it was indeed a man scheduled to play the role.

The Walking Dead: Behind the Scenes of Season 4

Fans of The Walking Dead, there is a new video out from AMC! It shows the cast behind the scenes of season 4. It seems there is much to look forward to, such as farm lands, larger hoards of walkers, and an immense threat on their newly home-sweet-home-like prison.

Season 4 picks up as season 3 did, after winter has passed. In that time, the prison has changed quite a bit, which you can preview in the video. Oh yeah…. spoiler alert! Glen and Maggie get it on!

Season 4 episode 1 airs on AMC, October 13th at 9PM.

Sherlock Season Three Teaser Trailer…FINALLY!!

You want to see the ultimate difference between fans of American shows and fans of British shows? Look at the Sherlock fandom. There have only been two seasons composed of a paltry three episodes (granted they are each 80+ minutes) each, yet Sherlock fans are rabid. They discuss and dissect every aspect from those six episodes as if they are a lifeblood. They pledge allegiance to the show’s stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as if they were demi-gods.

Need further proof? ‘The Reichenbach Fall’ aired in the US on May 20th. 2012. That’s right, it has been over a year since the last episode aired and you would never guess judging by the amount of buzz surrounding the show to this day.

However, today all of our patience is paid off, even if just the tiniest bit. That’s right, it’s a Sherlock season three teaser trailer!

This feeling can not be put into words so I offer this humble gif in hopes that it conveys the emotions currently felt.

Sherlock

Take solace in this little tidbit Sherlock fans, for we have yet awhile to wait. Season three premieres on PBS in “early 2014”. Hopefully there will be more trailers forthcoming to tide us over.

Dylan Bruce: Orphan Black Actor to Guest on Arrow, Hopefully Shirtless

If you watch Orphan Black, you are already familiar with Dylan Bruce. If you don’t watch the show, well then immediately head over and read our Top Ten Reasons You Should Be Watching Orphan Black.

Now that everyone is on the same page… today’s news. Dylan Bruce is coming to Arrow!

He’ll be Laurel’s newest coworker which sounds like a nice job but let’s remember what happens to pretty much everyone in Laurel’s life. It’s not pretty. Dylan Bruce will be making his stay in Starling City a short one, only appearing in two episodes at some point in the upcoming season.  Before you get your hopes up – no, Dylan Bruce is unlikely to be the new Barry Allen. While Flash is coming to Arrow, Bruce is playing a character named Adam Donner.

The real question is this… who does shirtless better? Stephen Amell or Dylan Bruce? You be the judge.

Shirtless Stephen Amell

Shirtless Dylan Bruce

If this season is anything like last season, this newest casting update is just the latest in what will be a long line of casting updates so stayed tuned here to Grizzly Bomb as we bring you all the Arrow news you could hope for.
