Weekly New Release Report – 12/18/12

We got a bit of a big week this week because Christmas is coming up in just one week and we have tons of releases to cover. We get our Tuesday releases, then our Wednesday movie releases, then on Friday, ANOTHER set of new releases to hit up with some MORE movies! I’m honestly this excited because this is also the week I chose to go Christmas shopping because I like to procrastinate. The fact that there are a lot of good deals out there and a lot of the good DVDs are coming out means I’ll be out there in force. Plus, once I get sick of hanging out with giant groups of people, I can just go relax in the movie theater and catch a new release. With that, let’s go have a gander to see what’s coming out and get everyone prepared.

anna kendrick new releaseFirst let’s go over the major releases for Tuesday, December 18th. We have Pitch Perfect, which has garnered lots of positive reviews and admittedly I’m curious about. It helps that I’m in love with Anna Kendrick.

There is also the reboot of the Total Recall, which I reviewed as not bad, which carries an alternate ending and director’s cut as well. I’ll assume the director’s cut has more f-bombs and more three-boobed people because that’s what these “cuts” usually mean. We also get Clint Eastwood’s Trouble With the Curve to see how long he can scowl at Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams.

As for the major releases coming out on Friday December 21st, let’s not forget Resident Evil: Retribution. There’s also the Joseph Gordon-Levitt flick Premium Rush. As for television, the previous seasons of Californication and Shameless are out so everyone can catch up before the new seasons start up next month.

Pitch Perfect

Total Recall (2012)

Trouble With the Curve

Resident Evil: Retribution

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

Premium Rush

Killer Joe

Shameless: The Complete Second Season

Californication: The Fifth Season

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles in Time (Triple Feature) [Blu-ray]

Out in Theaters:

On Wednesday December 19th, we get The Guilt Trip with Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand. I don’t think it’ll do too well but I like the writer (Dan Fogelman, Crazy, Stupid, Love and Tangled) and it gave me an idea for a review that will hopefully be up by the end of the week. We also get the re-release of Monsters Inc. in 3D for the kiddies. Finding Nemo didn’t do well for the re-release, but we’ll see with the holiday season coming up and kids getting out of school how it goes. Also in New York and Los Angeles, we get the first screenings of Zero Dark Thirty for those lucky enough to check it out.

As for the movies coming out Friday December 21st, Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher movie comes out. A lot of people have been complaining about how he doesn’t look the part of a 6’5” enforcer but we shall see. We also get This is 40, the new Judd Apatow release, going wide that day as well. Also for those that have seen Cirque Du Soleil, you get a 3D movie experience on-screen with Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away arriving in theaters for your consumption. Also of note, if you’re lucky to be in the LA or NY market, you get The Impossible with Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, which is something of a must see on my list.

With that, everyone have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday shopping from us here at the New Release Report. Good luck in those lines or if you’re lazy like me, there’s still time to ship stuff from Amazon. That’s why the links are above to help you out without having to leave your chair and face the weird people out in the malls.

Weekly New Release Report – 12/11/12

It’s still the holiday season last time I checked, so it’s that time to figure out what we need to get the people in our life. More importantly, what cool stuff that they totally think of you and your awesome gift-giving abilities. Gone are the days where you can give people a coupon book for free hugs, we now have to figure out what truly will touch their holiday hearts. Well have no fear because we are here to the rescue and are letting you know what cool stuff is hitting the streets. Let’s look at some new release movies first, shall we?

We have a good crop of new releases out this week, obviously led by Ted. Hilarious movie that everyone should watch and pick up for sure. For the kiddies, you also have the latest Ice Age movie so you can impress them when you fire it up on Blu-Ray 3D and watch it slowly scramble their brains when they gather around the TV during the holidays. We also have the Bourne Legacy coming out on Blu-Ray, which I definitely didn’t enjoy but that doesn’t mean you might not. Futurama Volume 7 also hits the shelves, which is a great, great, underrated show that everyone should watch. Other notables would be Dick Tracy on Blu-Ray, the Criterion Collection version of The Following, the first Christopher Nolan flick, Girls – Season One, WWE: Raw – The Top 100 Moments, and Miami Connection, the cult movie that just came out for everyone to laugh and cry about how awesome the 80s truly were.

For music this week, we have the new Bruno Mars album Unorthodox Jukebox dropping, along with the new Glee Christmas CD, as well as the 3rd Green Day CD this year and the Music of Nashville album based on all the songs from show so far. The most important album you need to pick up of course is the soundtrack score to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey because Howard Shore if a flipping genius.

Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album Vol. 3

Green Day – ¡TRÉ! [Explicit]

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Video Games:

As for video games this week, the two major ones are the Wii U version of 007 Legends and all the downloadable episodes of The Walking Dead that if you’re too lazy to download on XBL, you can now just pick it up at your local store and have at it. I also included Call of Duty: Black Ops II in the Amazon Carousel above but it’s a truly awesome game. I’d say challenge some of the Grizzly Bomb crew here but we don’t want to lose your respect because we are probably the worst team out there.

007 Legends – Wii U

The Walking Dead – XBOX 360

New in Theaters on Friday 12/14/2012:

Child, please. Of course it’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

That’s it for us today, hopefully this has helped inspire some gift ideas because Christmas is the time of getting a Blu-Ray so you can ignore freezing outside and just warm up by the fire with some Ted. Or Ice Age, depending how you want to expose kids to the vulgar nature of an awesome teddy bear. Your call.

The 2012 Grammy Nominations Are Out, Apparently a Concert Also Happened?

The 55th Grammy Awards are being given out on February 10th, 2013 so that means we have to have some nominees, right? They definitely accomplished that as the Grammy Nominations concert aired last night and featured performances from Fun., Maroon 5, Hunter Hayes, The Who, Ne-Yo and a couple of country artists who escape me. We also got to see Taylor Swift awkwardly host with LL Cool J so that was fun.

Leading the nominees are Fun., Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean, Jay-Z and Kanye West with six noms each. The Black Keys, Chick Corea and Miguel follow that with five nominations. Notably, Justin Bieber was not hit up for ANY nominations so single tear for that. But that didn’t stop him from making the news as his manager declared the Grammys a travesty because Bieber HAS to be the underdog according to EW.com. Dude, you’re a millionaire teenager that keeps tricking Selena Gomez to go out with you. You’re the opposite of underdog, you’re just a douche at this point if you need a chip on your shoulder. Just be happy you have tickets to the party. Regardless, some highlights have to be Frank Ocean and Fun. just dominated the nominations despite the fact that they were first time nominees. Frank Ocean is great people and you should listen to him.

Also Detroit’s own Jack White gets an Album of the Year nomination for Blunderbuss, which is richly deserved. Alabama Shakes probably cut Carly Rae Jepsen off the Best New Artist and I’m perfectly fine by that.

Mild entertainment at the expense of the Biebs.

There is a cool pattern that Hollywood Reporter noticed and that four out of the five nominees for Album of the Year are rock albums, with Frank Ocean being R&B. No pop nominations in there. Maybe it’s the sign of the times and that everyone is looking for something original out there in the world. No offense to the pop music world, myself being a defender of the pop persuasion despite the shame it brings me, but most of it is the same drivel and more producer based than actual artist based. In fact, pop music is full of entertainers, not musicians so it’s good to see the right people get their due. Speaking of pop music, man did they ever get shut out. Bieber got zero nominations, One Direction got the shaft, and Nicki Minaj got nothing (it’s not rap or hip hop anymore people, she’s gone pure pop). A lot of people are complaining because these artists (or entertainers I guess) sold the most albums out of anyone, they should be nominated right? People, this isn’t the people’s choice awards, or the Billboard Awards for that matter. If the Grammy Awards are trying to set a precedent about actual substance in the music, then bravo. Like I said, these artists/entertainers got nothing because it’s all production work. Yeah, its beautiful escapism but you couldn’t tell me that if they took a random member of One Direction, gave him Bieber’s team and production values, all his marketing and that I would tell the difference between the two? I sincerely doubt it. There were some other snubs like Coldplay, which I buy because as much as I like Mylo Xyloto, this was not as great as Viva La Vida. Lady Gaga was also snubbed as well but I think that also factored in that her last album sort of came off like a fart sound. Also yes, I consider Lady Gaga to be more artist than entertainer just because she does a lot of her own writing and production and has value as a musician, even if some of her songs don’t reflect that.

Anyways, below is a list of the nominees with in some of the major categories and this link will bring you to the full list. Again, the awards are on February 10th, 2013 on CBS so we’ll see if anyone walks away as the new Adele with her gaggle of awards.

Weekly New Release Report – 12/05/12

We here at Grizzly Bomb want to make sure that everyone knows exactly what’s going on this week in pop culture so we’ve decided to add yet another weekly segment. Here we will update you on what’s coming out this week on DVD/Blu-Ray, music, gaming and what’s in theaters to make sure you don’t miss out any of the good stuff. Or if it’s Twilight weekend, what to avoid when you about to head to the theater. We’re calling this the Weekly New Release Report, and our opening one covers the week of December 3rd, 2012. We figure this might help with your holiday shopping ideas so we’ll just do the work for you in gathering the ideas so you can just sit back and order from your computer while you continue to play Call of Duty and avoid the sunlight.

Looking at the list of new releases, I think the big one to look at is obviously The Dark Knight Rises. A great movie in its own right, it’s a must have for people to complete their trilogy. Obviously, it also comes with a trilogy box set so in case you’ve missed any of the past movies, they have that available. We also have the 3D release for Finding Nemo and The Odd Life of Timothy Green for those family-centric viewings you may have in store for the holidays. Just watch out with Timothy Green, that end can be a doozy on kids. The ones I’m psyched for are Brazil, Ninja Scroll and the Francis Ford Coppola Collection. Brazil because the old Criterion is out on Blu-Ray and I dug the movie and it was one of the first Criterion Collection DVDs I owned. Ninja Scroll because it’s nostalgic with my anime days and the Francis Ford Coppola collection because Apocalypse Now on Blu-Ray alone is worth the price of admission. Here’s the full list coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week:

In television DVDs, we have the third season of Eastbound & Down coming out, along with season 15 of The Simpsons for you enthusiasts that still watch the show. Obviously, more importantly, the second season of Star Trek: TNG is out as well so we would hope that you’re picking that up. TV listings… Engage:

Music:

Here are some options for music. Admittedly, the only one that would garner any interest would be the re-release of the of the Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness, but it’s exorbitantly expensive. I figured to list it for you ready to burn some money from your pocket.

Wiz Khalifa – O.N.I.F.C.

Ke$ha – Warrior

Florida Georgia Line – Here’s To The Good Times

The Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness

Video Games:

The two big releases are Far Cry 3 (which has been getting some great reviews out there) and the Mass Effect Trilogy. If you haven’t played Mass Effect, DO IT NOW. Such a great series to play and it is BioWare at their finest since the Knights of the Old Republic games came out a decade ago.

Far Cry 3

Mass Effect Trilogy

In Theaters This Weekend:

It’s a quiet weekend in theaters before The Hobbit steps into town next week, so we have Deadfall, with Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde and Charlie Hunnam, which looks like a cool movie and they actually made it available for VOD so you can check that out before it hits theaters. We also have Playing for Keeps, which generates a fart sound if anything. Gerard Butler, dude seriously, get a new agent.

Playing for Keeps

That’s it for our brand new segment, and we hope it helped with some of your holiday shopping. We’ll be back next week with more of the Weekly New Release Report!

Not So Big and Scary: My First Con Experience

Despite touting myself as a geek for years and being proud of that status, I didn’t realize conventions were actually a “thing” until I saw The Terminal and realized Zoe Saldana’s character was a Trekkie who loved going to cons.  At first I thought it was a joke, a cute little character development the writers of the movie decided was a unique way to set her apart.  Yet the more I looked into it, the more I realized that conventions were indeed a thing.

I didn’t make it to my first con until this month.  Call me undedicated to the world of geekdom, but I preferred to be able to afford food, clothes, and a roof over my head instead of spending all the money on a temporary hotel roof, plane ticket, and convention eats.  Fortunately, I got a press pass to attend my first con, Anime Nebraskon, and I stayed with a cousin, so that helped my decision to attend by a significant factor.  I’ve decided I really like press passes.

Yeah, I am not 100% sure who that is, but the name sounds familiar. The character, not the state.

Anime is a realm I never got into.  Watching Avatar: The Last Airbender and marveling over the beautiful artwork in the Final Fantasy games were the closest experiences to anime that I had ever come.  And yet here I was attending a con based solely around this genre; I felt lost as I looked at the weekend program.  The only anime-related session title I recognized immediately was Legend of Korra (that saved my skin a bit), and after perusing the program more closely, a few more titles seemed vaguely reminiscent from what I’d heard friends and Internet people talk about.  I fortunately found other sessions to attend like one about Rooster Teeth hosted by a community member I’d met on their website, as well as a fantastic session by voice actress Stephanie Young about what types of female characters voice actresses often play when they have a lower vocal range.

The best thing about the sessions and panels I did attend was that Anime Nebraskon, though one of the larger conventions for this Midwest area, still boasted small enough numbers that each session I sat in on did not seem like there were too many people for the moderators or hosts to interact properly with them (unless you were talking about the celebs like Stephanie Young and Steve Blum, and then of course the rooms were packed to the brim).  One guy even hijacked the “How to Create a Podcast” session when the real host failed to show up after 15 minutes of waiting, and since the hijacker said he did a Brony podcast, he decided to just teach the rest of us 10 or so attendees what he had learned from his experiences.

Avengers cosplay group – I like the drinking Tony Stark.

Also, I was very glad I had decided to dress in appropriate attire, and by appropriate I mean at least one geeky item of clothing or accessory.  For the first day, I decided to wear my Star Wars Her Universe Han and Leia t-shirt along with my Imperial logo earrings.  The second day, I plastered on dark eye makeup, wore my old Freelancer Tex shirt from Rooster Teeth, and dressed it up runway-style, with skinny black jeans, black boots, black military blazer, and a maroon fedora; I called it my “If Tex Were a Bad-Ass Fashion Model Instead of a Bad-Ass Killing Machine” look.

Unfortunately, by the time I found out about getting a press pass to Anime Nebraskon, I didn’t have time to make a costume, and no costume I owned seemed fitting for an anime convention (a self-created Amazon warrior via slave Leia costume, or Galadriel from Lord of the Rings).  I was wrong.  Though the majority of attendees were indeed in anime-style costumes, there were more than a handful of gaming characters there like 2-3 different Master Chiefs, Marvel and DC characters (including an epic grey Spider-Man who told me it took him over a year to put the entire costume together), and even some very realistic Jedi Knights and Clone Troopers running around.  Next time I’ll have to remember that pretty much any geeky costume will do.

BEAUTIFUL Master Chief armor. It lit up and everything.

I’d have to say the best part about the entire Nebraskon experience was the way that the convention organizers created a positive experience for all the attendees.  All the Nebraskon staff were willing to help out when asked a question or two, and many even seemed energized instead of drained by the crowd around them.  Though most people roll their eyes at or even jeer security staff, none of this happened that I could see, and most attendees were very respectful when security asked them to move closer to the wall or keep moving so as not to block other attendees’ pathways.  In addition, the con organizers made sure to put this sign up all over the convention center:

That’s right, it’s not.

With all the issues surrounding sexual harassment of specifically female cosplayers, this sign was refreshing to see.  What was more refreshing was the fact that I saw it enforced by the staff and security and respected by the attendees; I never once saw a guy take a picture of a girl without her permission, even if she was in full armor of some sort.  From what I’ve read, many cons, especially the larger ones, only wish they could expect this type of civility amongst their costumed patrons.

Overall, Anime Nebraskon offered a wide range of sessions and panels to attend for its intimate size, lots of time-intensive costumes to admire, and a positive, no-hassle atmosphere that makes me ignore the fact that only pizza was offered as the on-site caterer (yes, there was only one).  Would I attend Anime Nebraskon again?  Yes, most definitely.  However, I’ve now been bitten by the con bug; the experience only made me eager to make it to some of the larger and most famous ones out there.  That means you, PAX and San Diego Comic-Con.

The 10 Greatest James Bond Themes…

With the recent release of Skyfall, the 23rd (canon) James Bond movie, we thought we’d take a look at some of the things that have made the series so popular, and we’re gonna start with the theme songs. Below are what I consider to be the 10 best of 007’s themes, though probably not the 10 best movies…
