Square Enix to bring Kingdom Hearts back to Playstation

Excuse me as I have the biggest fangirl moment you’ve seen in a while…

Kingdom Hearts

What could cause such a reaction? Well it’s only a game announced at Sony’s E3 press conference that has been a long time coming. “Oh. All this over a game?”, you might say and I’d be inclined to agree except I. Love. This. Game. What game? It’s none other than Disney’s Kingdom Hearts.

When the first Kingdom Hearts came out in 2002, I only picked it up because I’m a fan of Disney characters. I hadn’t really played much of the Final Fantasy series so that aspect of it meant nothing to me. However, within a couple of hours of gameplay, I was hooked. It’s not often I’ll play through a game more than once, and it is rare that I’ll do it more than twice. I have played through that first Kingdom Hearts game at least ten times. Then 2005 rolled around and Kingdom Hearts 2 came out. Back then I thought I’d waited an eternity for that second game. Little did I know that I’d be halfway to my grave before the third full game was announced. Sure there have been quite a few small games released, mostly for Nintendo handhelds, but they haven’t captured the greatness that is the full-blown console version.

Thankfully, it seems as if my wait is finally over…

That’s right, Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally going to be released! Not only that, but Square Enix is putting together the first few games of Kingdom Hearts and re-releasing them for the PS3 in September. NOT ONLY THAT but if you preorder you will get a limited edition artbook.
How about 24 pages of behind-the-scenes imagery like character renders, promotional artwork and concept artwork from various Disney worlds from previous KINGDOM HEARTS titles like the original KINGDOM HEARTS, KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories, and KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days. — Square Enix
I didn’t really need another reason to preorder, but I’m a sucker for behind the scenes stuff and my bookshelf is missing a Kingdom Hearts book.

So if you were looking for a reason to justify purchasing the Playstation4, you’ve got one now. Lest you all think I’m alone in my excitement for this new chapter of a great franchise, the moment people realized what they were actually showing a trailer for, Twitter was one excited Kingdom Hearts tweet after another. It seems there are quite a few of us who’ve been waiting patiently for this day!

Batman: Arkham Origins – Who are the 8 Mystery Assassins?

So I don’t know if it’s bothering anyone else besides me, but I’m really, really, really, really, really, really wondering who the remaining assassins in Batman: Arkham Origins are! We’ve already had it confirmed in the recent trailer that two of them are Deathstroke and Deadshot, so that leaves six more foes for Batman that Black Mask has hired. So I guess it’s time to make a list of who I think should be included in this plethora of killers. Now it’s unclear as to whether or not some of the villains not typically specializing in assassin work have been hired by Black Mask because there are definitely villains appearing who don’t necessarily go for that type of thing, for example Penguin and the Joker. My list will be a mix of villains who are primarily assassins but also some villains we have already seen in the other two Arkham games:

1.) Firefly

So there isn’t much to Garfield Lynns, AKA Firefly. But what else do you need from an assassin than the ability to fly, a fireproof gun and a torch gun? Sounds like a match made in heaven to me… err hell maybe? Lynns was hinted at in Arkham Asylum and it would be great to see him HEATING up the city in Origins. That was a terrible play on words by the way.

Arkham Origins

2.) Caine

David Caine is one of the world’s premiere assassins, being hired to kill an abundance of rich and powerful people. Not to mention he actually trained young Bruce Wayne in the ways of the assassin, though Bats  never utilizes the knowledge to kill. It would be a pretty juicy tidbit to see someone who Bruce trained with trying to kill him, whether Caine knows that it is Bruce or not.

Arkham Origins

3.) Lady Shiva

Shiva is the top assassin in Ra’s Al’Ghul’s League of Assassins which didn’t figure prominently into the series until the second installment. Ra’s may have let the Black Mask hire Shiva in an effort to test the “detective” until such a time when Ra’s chooses to confront him. Not to mention Shiva is the mother of Cassandra Cain who was Batgirl for a time, and in the comics Cassandra was also the daughter of none other than David Caine. Perhaps this could figure into the next Arkham game that is a sequel to Arkham City?

Arkham Origins

 4.) Calendar Man

If Julian Day wasn’t born to figure prominently into this game, then I don’t know who is. The game takes place on Christmas Eve of all nights and that is perfect for this calendar obsessed sicko to take a shot at the Batman. We’ve seen hints of him in Arkham Asylum and in the flesh in Arkham City. Maybe we can see what landed him in his much deserved cell during this installment of the Arkham series.

Arkham Origins

5.) Bane

It was stated recently that Origins would have a toned down version of Bane in it. I could definitely see him as someone hired to come in and take down Batman, ala the Animated Series episode titled after the Venom induced breaker of the Batman. I could see him as being juiced to the point of having the frame of The Dark Knight Rises Bane, because if they want him toned down then they can’t have his overgrown, Titan fueled appearance from the other two games.

Arkham Origins

6.) Killer Croc

Waylon Jones is shown most times in the comics these days as a simple muscle for hire type of guy. His predatory instincts make him a very good choice for an assassin and based on all of the animosity he shows Batman in the other two Arkham games it would be interesting to see them interacting before Croc was imprisoned. It would also be fun to have an actual boss fight with Croc given that his appearance in the first game just had you running away from him and the second game only had a short cameo.

Arkham Origins

I have also listed a couple runner ups that I don’t expect to see, but wouldn’t mind if they filled the spots…

Clayface

I really can’t get enough Clayface. The boss fight in Arkham City against him was probably the best part of the game for me. I think Clayface having the ability to shapeshift into almost any weapon would definitely make him a very potent killer to take down Bats. The guy is basically a living weapon, just made of clay. And since this is dealing with Batman in his younger years, he could be having a showdown with a Clayface just beginning to utilize his new powers.

Arkham Origins

Maxie Zeus

Ok this guy is pretty ridiculous any way that you look at it, but I really liked his portrayal in the 1990’s Batman the Animated Series. While that is still a bit too cheesy, I think that in the Arkham Batman universe that he could really be turned into a legitimate threat. Maybe he could cool down the Greek mythology a tad bit and be an assassin who’s main weapon is that awesome lightning bolt scepter he uses. Like I said, it sounds terrible, but I think Maxie is scheduled for an appearance sometime, given that his night club Olympus was spotted in Arkham City.

So there you have my list! What are some of your picks for Arkham Origins? I know there are more out there! Doodlebug? KGBeast? Cheshire? Sound off below in the comments section!

Xbox One Has Been Revealed! Our Editors Debate Yay or Nay

So we finally got our big reveal for the next generation Xbox and it is called the Xbox One. It is being billed as the next revolutionary step  in not only gaming, but home entertainment. The ‘One’ concludes that this will be the only entertainment console and device that will be connected to your television because of its expansive features that will cater to all. From the new Kinect, technological innovations, partnerships with Skype, the NFL, and Comcast, Microsoft wants to be your exclusive hub for all things media. Of course, we have a varied range of opinions of the staff and we’re going to share our thoughts on the system, the press conference itself, and other things. Amanda Denton, Scott Fraser and myself dive into the essentials below, after the video of the reveal part of the press conference courtesy of IGN.

xbox one kinect

First, let’s just go through everything that’s been announced so far today. One of the big things they are pushing today is the Kinect. From the outset, this is a major part of the console as they have concentrated on improving the use of the Kinect and its integration into navigating the system. They called it ‘rocket science’ type stuff and while skeptical, for the most part it was impressive. Showing off the use of the system in tracking the unique voice and person, the system seamlessly moved between the Xbox Dashboard to cable TV to movies previously watched as well as music recently listened to. This is a result of the architecture inside which uses multiple operating systems and the new hardware that allows for a quick transition. Also taking advantage of the upgrade is the sensor that can recognize things with more accuracy, such as joints and being able to follow gestures of the body, to give a more accurate performance for games that need to track precise movements.

xbox one kinect demo

You are also able to enable something called ‘Snap Mode’, which allows you to run two windows or apps at the same time. By saying ‘Snap Mode’ and ‘Skype’ for instance, you can watch your movie on one edge of the screen and then enable a Skype call to your body and multi-task. It’s a nice feature that should cater to the ADD masses, as well as anyone that wants to have say, a television show in the background and not have to feel interrupted when a Skype call comes through. Also using hand gestures, you can easily go between modes and minimize and maximize windows as need be.

Going through the technical details, it’s probably best to lift the image from the presser and put it below before we dissect it:

xbox one tech specs

I’m sure none of this matters to a bunch of you but it’s important to note that it’s a powerful system inside. Plus a Blu-ray player is what most people are looking forward to and Sony has lost that advantage now from their gaming console. Again, the most impressive feature is the three operating systems that will run the system as you are able to switch back and forth between applications and windows as need be. Being able to go from game to the dashboard, to live TV and other applications will go a long way in trying to establish the Xbox One as the only machine that should be under your television. Getting back to the live television part of it, the demo they used was from Comcast television but they only said that it will work with compatible TV providers and no mention of exclusivity of certain providers. This is something that we need to keep an eye on just in case.

Speaking of TV, Xbox One will now carry original television programming. That’s right folks, get ready for a Halo television series produced by none other than Steven Spielberg.

http://widgets.ign.com/video/xnxx-92/embed/content.html?url=http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/05/21/halo-tv-series-announcement-xbox-one-reveal

Details are still up in the air but it should feature live-action and be done in conjuction with 343 Studios, the people in charge of Halo 4. You can debate that as you will but with the hiring of an ex-CBS programming exec, it was in the works for awhile. Other things we can look forward to is the use of the Cloud in order to record gameplay and saves so you can move from console to console or even to brag to other gamers about your achievements. Also having an editing platform for your videos will be included, as well as a built-in DVR function. With that, expect a constant internet connection to be required because the use of the Cloud and the promise of live updates for your system while not in use will make it essential to be connected at all times.

xbox one controllerThe new controller still is very familiar, with a few different button placements. The most important thing to note is the battery is now internal so the bump on the back will disappear and will now probably charge just like the PS3 controller. The new design also allows for more accuracy in the analog buttons and new triggers as well. Of course, we’ll probably have to wait until E3 to see what other differences there are when we can get our hands on it.

xbox one ea sports

As for game announcements, there were…uhh…not a lot. Obviously the big one would be Call of Duty: Ghosts, as well as EA Sports showing off their Ignite next-gen engine, as well as the new Remedy game Quantum Break for Xbox One but it was very light on games. Forza did look impressive but they are probably saving the rest of the big guns for E3 in the next coming weeks.

xbox one overhead

Overall, I came away from the press conference a bit underwhelmed. Maybe it’s just the gamer in me that wanted to see more games but the Xbox One seemed to really hammer the idea of the Kinect into our heads and the living room experience. That’s all fine and dandy but I honestly want to see why I should get this gaming system over the PS3. Technologically, the system is impressive but to demo that with Skype calls, Windows 8 interfaces, and the ability to switch to Live TV because it’s easier than hitting the Input button on your remote felt like pandering to the casual person. Which is great in a business sense but it didn’t grab me like I wanted it to.

Talking with Amanda and Scoot, our opinions varied a bit as well. Scoot noted that he was underwhelmed as well but he’s still excited. He also added the Kinect will be the big thing they are pushing which is odd considering that the current iteration has mixed opinions in the current gaming community. Amanda came away as impressed although wanted to hear if backward compatibility will make the jump to the Xbox One. I also asked them about things like the original programming. Scoot said the new system opens the door for television on the console, especially with going as far to produce an original Halo series for the console. Original programming also has Amanda excited despite the hiring of an ex-CBS exec for “original” entertainment.

She’s also excited about the use of the Kinect and expanding on that technology as well. With Microsoft pushing for this to be the only thing that you need for your television, Amanda also believed it could accomplish that task. With it having a Blu-ray and the use of Netflix and Hulu, there’s no real point in having a bunch of boxes when one will do. Scoot agreed with that assessment as the Blu-ray player plays a big part in the entertainment package for the living room. I also asked my fellow editors one the top feature they saw, the most disappointing and what they want to see in the next reveal at E3. Scoot said his favorite part was the Halo TV show because of the huge step Microsoft is taking with the inclusion of original programming but that it was also the most disappointing because he felt that was the top thing they were trumpeting with the system. He wanted to see more XBox One exclusives and more info on the new tech running the system, possibly of the rumored projector system. Amanda thought the top feature was the inclusion of the Blu-ray and the expanded Kinect integration. She’s most skeptical of the new programming chief for original programming because CBS doesn’t have the best track record in terms of ground-breaking entertainment. As for what she wants to see next, she wants more information about the television aspect, such as if a contract with Comcast is involved with it or the tuner being built in, or even if it’s included in the initial price point. Also, say you don’t have Comcast and are they the only TV provider? There’s still a lot of questions that need to be answered.

xbox one dash

We do know that it will be released at the end of this year, most likely in time for the holiday season so hopefully we’ll get more information around E3 time. Of course, please share your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page. What do you think, is Xbox One a game-changer or do you need to see more to make it the one and only system for you? In case you want more info, check out Wired’s and Techcrunch’s take on the new console as well!

Call of Duty: Ghosts Reveal Trailer Released and It’s Pretty

It’s Call of Duty. That’s really all that should be said but this time developer Infinity Ward has moved on from the Modern Warfare series. This time, we’re getting a more interactive experience and new story. Plus you get a dog as a teammate, and what better way to take on the rest of the world than having man’s best friend at your side. Call of Duty: Ghosts promises a more intimate experience with the story, which has been written by Academy Award Winner Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana) and more emphasis on your teammates. Below is the new trailer for it so let’s take a gander at it together:

It looks beautiful, doesn’t it? Seeing the lush rainforest and other environments should make this a great game to play on the next-gen systems. Having the game take place in a time where governments have fallen is an interesting twist on the genre and if anything, having Gaghan on as the writer increases the clout of Infinity Ward delivering a great single player story. Plus, it helps that the trailer plays like a movie as well. We can all hope for a Band of Brothers type of experience with your teammates being that they are all you’ve got. Of course, the trailer is still pretty vague so that and other aspects of the story remains to be seen. It should still be a great gaming experience to look forward to. Plus, the screenshot below just looks pretty as it came from the Xbox One presser earlier on Tuesday. As for this game, look for it November 5th, 2013. That day will also be known as the day several people call off work and the workplace comes to a grinding halt. Sign me up for that as well.

Batman: Arkham Origins – Actual Trailer Debuts

After a quick 47 second teaser the other day showing us a glimpse of the Bats vs Deathstroke, we now have a full trailer showcasing not only a longer fight, but a couple more bat-villains, including another one of the assassins that is hired to give Batman a dirt nap. For those of you not familiar with the story of Arkham Origins, it looks like the Black Mask will be our main villain, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see more of the rogue’s gallery including some of the veterans from the last two games. The story is set over the course of one night on Christmas Eve with presumably the top player in the Gotham underworld, Black Mask having had enough of the newly emerged vigilante known as Batman. To take down the bat, Black Mask hires eight of the deadliest assassins available to take out the Dark Knight, including the already revealed Deathstroke and Deadshot. Who the remaining assassins are is anyone’s guess, but I’m sure plenty of you out there have your ideas…

Aside from Black Mask, Deathstroke and Deadshot, there has been a screenshot of the Penguin showing up. It has also been confirmed that the Joker will be in the game showcasing his first encounter with Batman. To me the most interesting part of Origins is the prequel angle. We are going to see a younger and possibly inexperienced Batman fighting many of his enemies for the first time. Not to mention it’s not the first time that he’s met a lot of the villains, but his allies as well. From the sounds of things Jim Gordon will not be the commissioner in this game and the police will possibly have it out for the caped crusader. Does this also mean no Robin? No Nightwing? No Oracle support!? Say it ain’t so! But the game’s full content hasn’t been fully revealed so there’s no telling who may still pop up. Maybe his first encounter with Selina Kyle aka Catwoman to the ignorant.

bats01

Aside from all of the new story content, the developers from the game have stated that there is a more open world in Origins, if you can imagine Gotham being any bigger than it was in Arkham City. For now, plenty of fans of the Arkham series remain skeptical of the newest installment due to the game being released in October of this year, and not yet showcasing any actual gameplay. Also the new developer Montreal taking the reins from Rocksteady who did the last two Arkham games. I counted myself amongst the skeptics and I won’t be fully convinced until I actually play the game, but others who have played the game over at IGN have pretty positive things to say about the gameplay.

Arkham Origins

It sounds like Montreal didn’t mess too much with a good thing in terms of the combat system which is a relief, but they did make some minor tweaks. They’ve made Gotham much bigger this time around, the southern island being called New Gotham, so I can’t imagine anyone complaining about the map being bigger. There will still be boat loads of side quests and bonus content and as much as I enjoyed the detective mode in the first two games, it sounds like Montreal even took it a step further. According to Ars Technica, Batman’s suit in this game will have high powered sensors in it linked up to the Bat Computer and give you the ability to recreate a holographic reenactment of a crime scene that you can pause, rewind and play as you roam about the crime scene. Sounds awesome to me.

It's Anarky... great.
It’s Anarky… great.

Like I said, it’s still unfortunately too early to know until we all get our hands on the final product, but after reading IGN’s experience with the game along with a couple other sources I think the Arkham legacy may be safe in the hands of new developer Montreal. I can’t wait until October 25th and I feel very fortunate these games are always released around my birthday. So until more and more villains and characters are revealed, sound off below and give us some of your predictions.

‘Beyond: Two Souls’ Debuts 35 Minutes of Gameplay Footage

SPOILER WARNING: Mild story details revealed.

David Cage’s new title Beyond: Two Souls is being shown off at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend and yesterday Cage debuted 35 straight minutes of footage. The video focuses on a section of the game in which Jodie, the player-character, is living on the street.

http://youtu.be/JuDNpGvmGCQ

The clip seems to jump to certain key points in the chapter in order to showcase the variety of gameplay Beyond will offer the player. It begins with Jodie trying to scrape together some cash, which appears to be almost entirely scripted cinema stuff interspersed with a bit of walking and some of the same button prompt mechanics from Heavy Rain. It then moves to a street brawl with some rowdy teenagers in order to show the new combat system. Again, a lot of this looks to be on rails save for the occasional button-prompt, but it’s hard to tell without seeing someone play it in real time. Skipping ahead, Jodie goes on to help a woman give birth and later escapes a burning building before the video ends. There’s a lot of content being shown here, with lots of dialogue and a couple of times in which the player takes control of Aiden, the mysterious entity tethered to Jodie throughout Beyond: Two Souls. If you’ve been wanting to see  just how the game will play, this preview will give you a very good idea.

I have been ambivalent toward this game since its announcement. I have little love for Heavy Rain or David Cage, but I don’t want that to affect my judgement. For all of Cage’s pretentious and backwards ideas about video games, we do need more mature stories in this medium and if nothing else, Beyond is trying to tell a sincere, deliberate story.

Beyond: Two Souls

It’s also impressive just how much the animation and acting have improved since Heavy Rain. The detail on the face models is breathtaking and the motion capture has led to very fluid character movement, but it’s the VO that has impressed me most. Not a hint of the same absurd accents and bad acting acting that ran rampant in Heavy Rain (Although some of the dialogue is still pretty terrible). Ellen Page is putting a quality performance into her role as Jodie, and you can see it in this half hour demo. It also helps that there is something about Beyond: Two Souls that feels reminiscent of two of her previous film roles, The Tracey Fragments and Hard Candy.

The bottom line of the whole video for me is that this still looks like a mostly passive experience. Quantic Dream say that Beyond has a lot more active gameplay than Heavy Rain did but this footage really only shows the same kind of button-prompt nonsense we’ve seen from them before. True, Aiden’s new possession mechanics are thrown in as well, but it doesn’t really seem to be all that dynamic. It’s basically just another layer of very rigid point-and-clicking. Truth be told, this preview has me more convinced that I won’t be buying Beyond: Two Souls. I prefer to play games and watch movies, not the other way around.
