Hey, you like movies? Yes! Great, I guess we can be friends AKA you can read EVERYTHING I write. Enjoy! And instead of more on me, I figured I'd just leave you with some helpful advice that always keeps me going, "life's a dirty game, you gotta play dirty to win it".

Non-Stop: New Trailer Looks Like Taken on a Plane

The reason the 2008 film Taken is one of the best action flicks in recent years has nothing to do with its incredibly “original” plot, or the setting of the film. It has to do solely with the simple conceit of Liam Neeson being a badass. While we were given a poorly made sequel that decided to make him immobile for half the movie, it seems we might get to see him in a balls to the walls action film once more in the form of Non-Stop. In this one, Neeson plays an Air Marshall who, during an international flight, receives a menacing text that a passenger will be killed every 20 minutes. The synopsis sounds pretty neat, but the trailer takes it to insane levels, check it out:

Wow, that looks crazy. The trailer seems to go from tight psychological thriller to psychotic action with military jets shooting, Neeson snatching and shooting a gun in the air, and we also get some good hand to hand combat. This looks to be the perfect early year action film that’s nothing more than a fun time at the theater. Non-Stop‘s Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the man behind Neeson’s other decent action movie, Unknown, and the horror film Orphan, and boasts a solid supporting cast including Julianne Moore (Crazy, Stupid, Love), Hell on Wheel’s star Anson Mount, and ‘House of Card’s Corey Stoll.

Jack Ryan Trailer Looks Better Than Expected

Diving back into the franchise started by the incredible author Tom Clancy, who sadly passed away last week, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit hopes to restart his franchise on the big screen. Directing is Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Thor) whom also stars as the main antagonist opposite Chris Pine (Star Trek), who takes the titular role in this one, stepping into shoes previously filled by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and even Batman himself, Ben Affleck.

Joining him is Kevin Costner, who interestingly has signed a two-picture deal to reprise the same role in another Tom Clancy Series that Paramount is trying to kickstart, Without Remorse. Other notable faces are Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean) and David Paymer (Mr. Saturday Night).

Initially written by newcomer Adam Cozad, David Koepp (Spiderman) was called in to do rewrites, and the film is only based on Clancy’s characters, not a specific book.

The plot for this one centers around a CIA analyst, Jack Ryan, who discovers a Russian plot to destroy the US economy. It sounds somewhat generic, but nobodies pegging this to be a complex character study, instead just deliver on its promise as an action spy flick that entertains. By the looks of the well-cut trailer, it seems to succeed:

Going in I had zero expectations for this because it seemed like another throw away action movie, kind of what the Die Hard series has become, but damn is this trailer put together nicely. Between the music, and the practical action scenes, this looks to be one hell of a good time at the theater.

As I said, this one isn’t going for Oscar’s, but likely be more in the vein of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol ,  it looks to simply be a fun movie with some cool action set-pieces. Also, the playback between Pine and Costner is a nice touch, and Branagh as the stoic russian villain could surely add to the entertainment.

The first official poster was also released:

Breaking Bad Fans Rejoice As ‘Better Call Saul’ Greenlit

As the final three episodes of Breaking Bad air in the coming weeks, fans have been anxiously waiting for the conclusion, yet sad at the ending of this incredible world the show has created. Luckily, it seems it won’t be the last time we get to visit Albuquerque. Better Call Saul, a working title, is a Breaking Bad spin-off series that has just been given the “go ahead” as an agreement between AMC and Breaking Bad producer Sony Pictures TV. The show hasn’t been given a formal season order with them waiting to make final agreements with Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould (the man who co-created Saul), and of course, Bob Odenkirk, who plays the titular, sleazy and charismatic lawyer, but that seems like it’ll be finalized in the coming days.

Saul Goodman with Cash

Taking place prior to Breaking Bad, the show is said to be in the one hour format, and focus on the evolution of Saul Goodman before he became the iconic lawyer for Mr. White. It’s also said to be a bit lighter than its parent show with an eye towards more comedy. Given how the character is commonly, and brilliantly, used for comedic relief in BB, this comes as hardly a surprise.

Since this is a prequel, Saul’s fate in this final season is still up in the air, and the question that arises is who might pop up in this series. There are still a few characters who could make an appearance, and seeing how Breaking Bad likes to keep everything tightly wound together, it wouldn’t be shocking to see characters tie into this. I think it’d be neat to flip the procedural type story in it being about a lawyer who helps bad people get out of trouble. With a good dose of comedy, this could make for one hell of a series.

Here’s a great interview with Gilligan talking about his thoughts for the series back in July, check it out:

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane: Trailer For It’s Long Awaited US Release is Finally Here

So here’s a trailer for a film that premiered at TIFF in 2006, then in 2008 was released to theaters in the UK, and subsequently released on DVD in the UK the same year. That means almost seven years to the date of its premiere, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane is finally getting a US release. Jonathan Levine directed this horror flick and has since moved on to bigger and more critically praised projects such as The Wackness, the incredibly sad and funny at the same time film 50/50, and the comedic zombie tale Warm Bodies. Starring in the titular role of Mandy Lane is Amber Heard (Never Back Down, Paranoia). The story is as follows: a group of teenagers invite a shy but popular girl, Mandy, to spend the weekend at a secluded ranch with them, and are soon terrorized by a stalker of hers. Sounds interesting with just enough originality in the ‘cabin in the woods-type’ trope to peak my attention. Check out the trailer below:

Honestly, the trailer doesn’t impress me too much, but the fact that they’re getting it out to theaters 7 years after it premiered, when it can already can be bought on DVD outside the United States, has to say something of the quality. That said, reviews have been very divided with some praising it, and others saying it diverges from what could be a clever story. Also, others who have reviewed it recently have said the hype of this long awaited release is too big for what the film deserves. But, while not horror flicks, The Wackness and 50/50 were two of my favorite movies the years they came out, so anything Levine makes is a must-see to me. Joining Heard is Whitney Able from the under appreciated sci-fi flick, Monsters (sequel’s coming out), and Anson Mount from the TV series Hell on Wheels.

The film is already out on VOD, and is set for a theatrical release October 11.

‘Neighbors’ Official Red Band Trailer Released, Hijinks with Seth Rogen & Zac Efron To Be Had

As 2014 approaches, more and more trailers for the beginning of the year are dropping in hopes of engaging the audience early, and that’s the case with this surely R-rated comedy, Neighbors. Director Nicholas Stoller, whose most recent credit is the underrated The Five Year Engagement, but whom most know as the man behind Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the spin off, Get Him to the Greek, is at the helm of this Adults vs Frat Bros comedy.

The story goes as follows, a couple with a newborn baby are faced with troubles when a fraternity moves in next door. The story seems pretty simple, but it’s definitely prime for some raunchy comedy with its stellar cast.  Seth Rogen (This is the End)  and Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids) star as the older couple, while Zac Efron (High School Musical), Dave Franco (21 Jump Street), and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad) play the frat boys. Check out the hilarious, albeit short, red band trailer below:

As I said above, the set up seems prime for some R-rated comedy, and while we’ve seen the whole adults trying to fit in with the younger crowd before, this seems to be more of insane hijinks between the two groups than them trying to fit in with one another. I mean that ending bit with the airbag was freaking hilarious, and the Robert De Niro costume is a funny idea too. While it’s still a ways off, I’m sure come time next year people will be talking about this comedy. In addition to the cast listed above, some notable TV comedic talents star as well; Jake Johnson (New Girl), Carla Gallo (Undeclared), and Lisa Kudrow (Friends) each have a part in this 2014 flick.

Neighbors, formerly titled Townies, is due out May 9 next year.
