Death of a Legend: Etta James (1939-2012)

On January 20th, the world lost an amazing woman. Etta James passed away from a terminal case of Leukemia just short of what would have been her 73rd birthday. On January 25, 1939, Jamesetta Hawkins was born. When she began her music career with the Peaches in the early 1950s, she changed her stage name to Etta James.

In late 1960, her most popular album by far, At Last, was released, featuring the title track which has since been played at every single wedding since. Etta was famous for her jazzy, bluesy, and powerful yet soulful voice.

In the 2008 movie Cadillac Records, Beyoncé Knowles played the role of Etta James.

On her blog, Beyoncé said this about Etta:
”Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist. When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter.”
There are few artists in the world who have had such a strong influence on the music world. Etta James will be greatly missed.

Season 3 of ‘The Walking Dead’ Will Now Be 16 Episodes!

Zombie fans, be excited! The Walking Dead is extending the number of episodes per season yet again! The first season was a mere 6 episodes, which left everyone craving more.

Season two, which we are currently in, will be a total of 13 episodes when all is said and done. Season two will return on February 12. Season three will be split up into two parts, just as season two was.

This detail surfaced during an interview that Glen Mazarra did with the Television Critics Association Winter press tour. The season 2 premiere proposal that we mentioned before was brought up during this interview as well, and Mazarra was asked about Frank Darabont’s turned down genius idea. Mazarra basically stated that it was one of many ideas that were brought up in the writers’ room and that the idea felt like a stall. Mazarra said that they just wanted to get to the characters.

The Walking Dead season 2 will continue on Sunday, February 12th at 9:00pm.

The Walking Dead: Season 2’s Original Opener. That We Will Never See!

I am sure that if you are reading this, you are a fan of the AMC series The Walking Dead. Many of my friends are fans as well as myself, and we have had many discussions about season two. Yes, it ended up being a thrilling season so far, but the beginning could have been much more interesting. The way the season began was not nearly as exciting to me as season 1 was. (It also set up one of the most annoying wild goose chases in television history with Sophia and the gang.)

When I found out via Geek Tyrant that there was another story in mind that we will never see now because AMC fired Frank Darabont, I was a sad panda. Sam Witwer, a character from season 1, explained the idea this way in an interview:

Look, I think it would be really cool to tell a prequel story about how Atlanta fell, do ‘Black Hawk Down,’ but with zombies, have a few main characters pass through, but the lead will be you. You’re a soldier and all these horrible things happen, and the chain of command breaks down, and, eventually, you have to take out your superior officer. Then, eventually, in the end, you get bit.’ He’s pitching me this. ‘You’re crawling and you crawl into this tank and you have a grenade and you’re going to blow yourself up, but you set the grenade next to you and you die. Then, we reprise the scene from the pilot, where Rick gets in the tank and there’s a zombie there.’

Quint from Ain’t It Cool News sought out Frank Darabont to verify that the information from Witwer was legit. Here is his response:

Release Date for Paranormal Activity 4 ANNOUNCED

As a fan of this series of horror flicks, I am thrilled to reveal that the fourth installment to the Paranormal Activity franchise will be ready by this Halloween! The first movie was made on a $15,000 budget and grossed $194.4 million. I would suffer through that all day long!

For obvious reasons, they continued on with 2, then 3. I went to the midnight showing for Paranormal Activity 3, and I have to say that I was shocked by the amount of people at the theater. Despite the gross of the first movie, I was under the impression that this series was much more underground and unrecognized. I was corrected when I had to stand in a mile-long line for the theater. My first thought was “Oh God, no! It must be another stupid Twilight movie”. I asked the lady behind the counter what the massive crowd was for and she laughed and said “uh… Paranormal Activity.” Yes, she was a twat about it. Although the theater was full of super-douches and loud bitches, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I will be going to the midnight showing for Paranormal Activity 4 on October 19. You better believe that I will be back here to either rave about it or rant until I am blue in the face!

If you haven’t seen these, you can rent out the first 3 Paranormal Activitys at LOVEFiLM today. If you are not already a member, sign up at LOVEFiLM now to get a 2 week free trial…

Amy Winehouse’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures

On July 23rd, the world lost Amy Winehouse. The millions of fans of her jazzy music and soulful lyrics were left to wonder if we would ever hear her beautiful bluesy voice again. On October 31st, the official Amy Winehouse website posted that a posthumous album of finished, yet previously unreleased music would be available for the public on December 2nd by Island Records.

Although clearly devastated by her untimely passing, this 45 minute CD was almost like a treasure she left for her fans. The CD was appropriately titled Lioness: Hidden Treasures.

I got the CD the day it was released. Not only has the album not left my CD player, but it has been constantly playing on loop. I have read her biographies and own every piece of music that she has been a part of. I would definitely consider myself a huge fan of hers. I must say that it is horribly depressing that Amy is now part of that dreaded club where everyone is 27, overly talented, and dead. At least she left us these 12 tracks to help ease the pain.

There are songs on the new CD which we have already heard, such as “Valerie” and “Wake Up Alone“. Although we had already heard them, these are different versions of these songs. In fact, the Lioness version of “Wake Up Alone” is much more emotional and literally brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. There are also songs that we have heard before, but not by Amy Winehouse. For instance the 60s and 70s hits “The Girl From Ipanema, Our Day Will Come”, “A Song For You” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” are redone with the Winehouse touch that not only displays immense talent, but also could choke up the most soulless listener. Also, there is a duet with Tony Bennett. And lastly, the new tracks which I absolutely love: “Between the Cheats”, “Half Time”, “Best Friends, Right?” and “Like Smoke”. I must say that this album shows more than the one-dimensional side of Amy Winehouse that the world tried to force on us. Yes, she sings about drug use. Yes, she sings about quarrels and falling outs. Yes, she sings about drinking. But listen closer, and you will get a beautiful life story. Listen to her first album, Frank, then her second “Back to Black” and this final compilation of treasures. She tells a tale of heartache, success, failure, disappointment, love, lust, and overcoming her own demons. A portion of every CD purchased goes to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which is a charity set up by Amy’s parents on what would have been her 28th birthday… so don’t download this one.

I am obviously giving this album a 5/5 rating. I hope that you will all listen to this gem. It is an instant classic.
