Bring in the supervillains!

That seems to be an upcoming theme from Hollywood. You’ve the early versions of Penguin, Riddler, and Two-Face on the Gotham television series, and the government-approved and expendable Suicide Squad ready to bloody the big screen next August. And now, the folks over at Marvel want to venture onto the dark side of the super-powered fence as well.

Jessica Jones: NetFlix Releases New Trailers for Marvel Show

I like Jessica Jones. I enjoyed her intro in Marvel’s MAX imprint Alias #1, and subsequent appearances throughout the rest of the Marvel universe like the Young Avengers. And that’s unusual for me: I typically prefer my heroes to be super-heroic and part of team books like the X-Men. But Jones, a retired superhero more at home solo in dark alleys and chasing mysteries noir-style, appealed to my growing desire for more adult, contemporary stories outside of whom is dating whom in the superhero jet set (here’s glaring at you, Superman / Wonder Woman).

Godzilla versus King Kong versus the Pacific Rim Jaegers. Talk about a fanboy (and fangirl, let’s not be sexist here)’s wet dream! And such a big screen brawl would be theoretically possible with the big ape moving from Universal Studios to Warner, which owns rights to both Godzilla and Pacific Rim via Legendary Pictures.

Batman to Add Police Racism to Long List of Controversial Stories

Batman fighting – and beating up – the Gotham police is well-known to long-time comic book fans and even the general public via the movies and other media. But starting in Batman issue #44, the Dark Knight has to unclench his fists as he reflects how both the superhero and philanthropist Wayne personas may have added the all-too real-world problems of racism, police brutality, poverty and societal clash to the fictional city.
