Five Films To Stoke Your Halloween Spirit

This is the time of year when the leaves start to change to vibrant colors and a cold chill fills the air. It is the end of October and it is the time where we prick up our ears at strange sounds at night. But what if you haven’t been bitten by the Halloween spirit yet? What are you waiting for? Here are five movies to get you into the mood for the holiday!

[tabgroup][tab title=”Trick ‘R Treat”]

sam-trick-r-treat1

One of the better anthologies that are out there focusing on Halloween. There are four stories that are interwoven together and they are all awesome. Sprinkle in some comic art and some great costumes and special effects and this will get you in the mood for the holiday.[/tab]

[tab title=”Insidious”]

There are movies that I watch religiously and there are movies I will watch once and never again. This is the ONLY movie I have not watched at all because it is that scary. I’ve showed it to other people and they have come back to me shivering. The film will worm its way into your brain and stay there making you jump at strange noises at night.[/tab]

Why choose this film instead of the first? Simply, because I have to say that this film is superior than the first one in every single way. These four stories will captivate you and will want to watch the entire movie from beginning to end.[/tab]

[tab title=”The Innkeepers”]

the innkeepers

This has a very creepy vibe to it as it deals with two people who are watching over an inn. The inn has seen better days and it is about to close, but the two folks who take care of the inn are also ghost hunters. And, what’s worse they go looking for ghosts in this inn and when they find them that is when the problems start. Not quite The Shining, but that is hard to beat.[/tab]

[tab title=”You’re Next”]

This is a film I missed in the theaters and will see at some point if only because the premise sounds so promising. A house in the countryside in which the family is trapped when they come under attack from animal masked killers? What more perfect a choice to watch as you sit in the house waiting for all the little trick or treat’ers to come knocking on your door?

These are some of the scary movies that are out there that will get you into the mood for Halloween. What about you? What are some of the scary movies you love to watch to get you in the mood for this holiday? Let us know as we love to hear from you!

Halloween Songs to Chill You to the Bone!

Happy Halloween to all you Grizzly Bomb readers out there. No doubt a lot of you will be getting geared up for your own Halloween antics and slapping on your costumes for a night filled with mischief and scares. For anyone that is having a party, some terribly terrific tunes will be needed to add just the right atmosphere. Grizzly Bomb is more than happy to oblige. Here is a short play list of this reviewers personal favorites; hopefully they will manage to give you all a bit of a chill.

Rocky Horror Picture Show – Over at the Frankenstein Place

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a film that is perfect for any occasion, but Halloween is where it truly can shine. The soundtrack has so many fantastic tracks on it that it is tricky to pick one, but this one is just perfect for when you need to slow the mood down and have a sing along with your friends at the same time.

Alice Cooper –Man behind the Mask

What is better than Friday the 13th on Halloween? Alice Cooper singing about Jason Voorhees perhaps? A rocking track from the great man himself which, if you are of a certain generation, will get you rocking around the kitchen with a tie around your head in no time.

Bobby Pickett and the Crypt Kickers – Monster Mash

Now this is a classic song for the Halloween season. You will be hard pressed to find anyone that has not heard this song at least once and it is perfect for all you monster mashers out there.

Sheb Wooley – The Purple People Eater

While more of an obscure selection, this but song has some great visuals attached to it. With such a catchy tune it’s difficult not to want to sing along to the chorus when it kicks in.

Warren Zevon – Werewolves of London

This song probably has another meaning and is not to be taken literally. But it does conjure up some awesome visuals and with such great lyrics involving werewolves that eat Chinese food and attack old ladies it is a perfect Halloween themed tune.

Oingo Boingo – Dead Man’s Party

Oingo Boingo are better known for their work on 80’s classics like Weird Science. But it is also a band that had a certain Danny Elfman in it (the man behind pretty much every Tim Burton film score to date). With his band Oingo Boingo he made some incredible musical hits including this little tune.

Ramones – Pet Cemetery

The Ramones are rock legends and have dabbled in film scores before (Rock and Roll High School is one of the most notable entries), but this tune manages to capture the feeling of Stephen King’s work perfectly.

Ozzy Osborne – Bark at the Moon

Ozzy has knocked out some incredible horrific tunes but this song (for the video alone) needs to be included in any Halloween bash. The great guitar riffs certainly don’t hurt this piece of metal history.

Rob Zombie – Living Dead Girl

It is difficult to pick a White Zombie track that does not exhibit Rob Zombie’s unique love of horror movies. But with Living Dead Girl he manages to give us an incredible song which also harks back to the German horror films of the silent era of cinema. This tune is not as frantic as his other hits (like say Dragula), but it is still a hauntingly effective tune that is great to listen to with the lights out.

Michael Jackson – Thriller

The grand daddy of music videos and the ultimate Halloween song, there is little else to say about this John Landis directed masterpiece. It is with this video that we will leave our trip through the weird world of music and let you readers enjoy your Halloween antics. There are plenty more Halloween songs out there, but hopefully this list will keep you entertained until the trick or treating commences.

Now how could I end an article on spooky tunes without including this classic!

X-Men: Days of Future Past Trailer – Old Meets Young

The day has finally arrived in which we get our first real look at Bryan Singer’s newest incarnation of the X-Men franchise. That’s right, the X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer is here!

I’ll admit that X-Men: First Class is easily my favorite of all the films to date so I was quite excited to see James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender back as Magneto and Professor X. Of course they aren’t quite themselves, especially Professor X, as shown by the copious amounts of dust being blown off Cerebro. Well, that and Patrick Stewart saying “I was a very different man.”

James McAvoy and Cerebro in Days of Future Past

The trailer seemed like it gave everyone a little bit of screen time, both returning mutants and those new to the game. If X-Men: Days of Future Past does nothing else, it will hopefully be remembered as the movie that featured actors named Bingbing and Booboo. Incidentally, they both look quite amazing as Blink and Warpath.

There was very little to quibble over with this trailer. It had direction, gave a good look at the plot of the film (for those of us who are not very familiar with the X-Men books), and was pretty in doing so. However, outside of Nixon looking nothing like Nixon, my biggest issue was the use of “Adagio in D” from Sunshine. I understand that it is a beautiful piece of music and it does fit quite well with the action of this trailer, but it is getting dangerously close to being overused. I’d much rather have heard something from John Ottman’s score.

So, are you excited for X-Men: Days of Future Past? Does this first trailer make you more excited? This is the first of many, many, many trailer and posters and photos and pretty much the deluge of material that comes along with modern film promotion, but it is nice to enjoy this moment when everything is new and fresh.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 23rd, 2014.

Non-Stop: New Trailer Looks Like Taken on a Plane

The reason the 2008 film Taken is one of the best action flicks in recent years has nothing to do with its incredibly “original” plot, or the setting of the film. It has to do solely with the simple conceit of Liam Neeson being a badass. While we were given a poorly made sequel that decided to make him immobile for half the movie, it seems we might get to see him in a balls to the walls action film once more in the form of Non-Stop. In this one, Neeson plays an Air Marshall who, during an international flight, receives a menacing text that a passenger will be killed every 20 minutes. The synopsis sounds pretty neat, but the trailer takes it to insane levels, check it out:

Wow, that looks crazy. The trailer seems to go from tight psychological thriller to psychotic action with military jets shooting, Neeson snatching and shooting a gun in the air, and we also get some good hand to hand combat. This looks to be the perfect early year action film that’s nothing more than a fun time at the theater. Non-Stop‘s Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the man behind Neeson’s other decent action movie, Unknown, and the horror film Orphan, and boasts a solid supporting cast including Julianne Moore (Crazy, Stupid, Love), Hell on Wheel’s star Anson Mount, and ‘House of Card’s Corey Stoll.

Non-Stop Movie Poster

Non-Stop is due out February 28th.

Final Hunger Games Trailer Has Arrived!

If you happened to be watching baseball tonight (Go Cards!), you might have noticed a power surge during the fifth inning. That would be because it was announced that there would be a new The Hunger Games trailer shown after the top of the inning. Not only was it new, it was the final.

That’s right, we have officially reached the home stretch. While it seems like ages ago that the first Catching Fire trailer was released, all the waiting is about to come to an end. To help make the wait a little bit more tolerable, check out the trailer below!

There has been a lot of promo material of late talking about the Quarter Quell, and Haymitch, Effie, Finnick Odair… pretty much everyone, but this trailer goes back to where it all began, Katniss Everdeen and her bow. Katniss and her sister. Katniss and the President. And perhaps most important, Katniss and Peeta.

If there was any doubt that this sequel will lack any of the intensity the first film had, just watch Peeta try to convince Katniss that “It isn’t real” and all doubt will ease away.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire arrives in theaters on November 22nd. Do you have your tickets yet?

Batman: Arkham Origins – What We Want To See

Batman: Arkham Origins comes out this week, and with a new developer behind it, there’s no real way to know how the third installment will compare to the previous two. Sure, we’ve seen some Arkham Origins trailers and have heard some of the core details about the Dark Knight’s next foray into video game Gotham, but there’s so much we can’t know about the game until we get our hands on it on October 25th. Here are five dos and don’ts we hope to see when we tag along for Bats’ second Christmas Eve later this week:

Don’t: Mess With the Combat.

Of course, the shining heart of the Arkham series is the free-flowing combat system that forever changed the standard of the 3D brawler. A large part of what allows us to feel like the Caped Crusader in these games is being able to take down an entire mob of gangsters with one fluid dance of fists and justice. We know that Warner Bros. Montreal has made some tweaks and changes to the existing combat from Arkham City, but they seem to have been very conscientious about taking things too far away from their roots. Let’s keep things fairly grounded, here: Not too many elaborate gadgets or rooftop gymnastics, but make us capable of handling every situation with the right combo or a well-placed batarang.

Do: Mess With The Rest of Gameplay.

If there’s one thing that Arkham City faltered at, it was variety – Fly around, find a Riddler puzzle, give a football team’s worth of gangsters a close-up view of the pavement – We were rarely faced with a new mission type or challenge. Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast completing every single piece of the singleplayer campaign, but most of the enjoyment came from Rocksteady’s deft hand at weaving Batman lore into the world, and the sheer joy of the mechanics that I had already become used to. However there’s more to being Batman than aggressive criminal dentistry, and it looks like in Origins we’ll get to explore the side of Bats that earned him the title of World’s Greatest Detective. WB Montreal has shown off a bit of the detective gameplay wherein the player will have to piece together a crime scene in order to make progress in a mission. I really want this to be a fairly major component of the story and not just a handful of neat moments sprinkled into the game, and if the developers have even more fun ways to round out the gameplay I’ll be ecstatic.

Don’t: Sacrifice Substance for Size.

Batman: Arkham Origins is going to be the largest of the three games to date, expanding to incorporate all of Gotham City rather than the titular Arkham City and Asylum settings from the previous two titles. As good as Arkham City is, it lost the intimacy of Asylum‘s closed walls and Metroidvania style backtracking which made the iconic prison grounds feel oppressing and teeming with activity. Origins risks doubling down on that loss by adding a lot of square footage to the map. Hopefully the promises of a more varied cityscape, due in part to featuring more than desolate slums full of escaped prisoners, will liven up the environment and feature more details to discover.

Do: Play with Gotham City.

A lot can happen in a large metropolis and there’s enough history in Batman canon to fill that space. Not all of Bruce Wayne’s world is depressingly dark and filled with villains. Arkham City was so depressing and grey that certain moments looked like a black and white movie. This is appropriate a lot of the time, but it can’t be all there is to Gotham City or no one outside the poor, the morally questionable or the colorblind could live there and keep their sanity. I want Arkham Origins to show some of the livelier side to Gotham – Give us families, car dealerships, people snapping photos of Batman on the move. I want to feel that there’s more to Batman’s world than a dank cave and a parade of creepy men to fight. Remind us of what he fights to protect.

Do: Tell  Us a Story.

I’m breaking pattern here, but the truth is I have way more positives than negatives to look forward to in this game. That’s because, with whatever flaws great or small that can be found in Arkham Asylum and City, what both of them achieved was a story on par with some of the better source material. Asylum, specifically, tells a much better story for some of the characters than I’d ever seen in the past. Arkham Origins actually looks like it might be far more focused on delivering a satisfying Batman story than City, with a younger, more brutish Batman, still regarded as a vigilante by the police force and a new threat by the criminal underworld. The fact that it all takes place over one night on Christmas Eve makes even more epic. If it can manage to keep a strong pace and treat the characters with as deft a hand as Rocksteady did twice in the past, this will unquestionably a wonderful way to usher in the new console generation.
