Geeking Out: ‘Young Justice Invasion’

Welcome to Geeking Out. This is me, geeking out. It’s pretty self explanatory.

The second season of Young Justice (subtitled Invasion) premiered this morning, and it pretty much blew my mind to useless bits of nerdy gray stuff. I thought nothing could get better than the already stellar first season, where we were introduced to the Team, a group of former sidekicks running special ops missions for the Justice League. Now that already sounds pretty bad ass right? The original team consisted of Robin (Dick Grayson), Aqualad, Kid Flash, and Superboy, with new members Artemis and Miss Martian joining shortly after.

2012 NHL Playoff Preview: Conference Semifinals

Just for the record: In my first round playoff preview I only predicted half of the games correctly and got one series exactly correct (Phoenix in 6). There also will be no repeat of last year’s Stanley cup Finals as both Vancouver and Boston were eliminated.

Phoenix Coyotes (#3) vs. Nashville Predators (#4)

By taking care of business versus Chicago the Coyotes advance into the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 25 years and the first time since moving to the desert. The first five games of their series against the Black Hawks went into overtime, an NHL first, and youngster Mikkel Boedeker got back-to-back game winning goals. With Hanzl and Vrbata battling some injuries and Shane Doan skating his way out of quality scoring chances they had to rely on the likes of newcomer Antoine Vermette to put the puck in the net. What most people will remember from this series however is the head shot Raffi Torres laid on Marion Hossa that garnered him a hefty 25-game suspension. Nashville, on the other hand, took out Phoenix’s greatest playoff kryptonite in the Red Wings. Detroit just didn’t have that killer instinct this year and Nashville was able to grind away a series victory bolstered by the strong play in net by Pekka Rinne. Rinne and Phoenix’s Mike Smith were both brilliant in the first round posting identical 1.81 GAA albeit with Smith appearing in an extra game. This should be a really good grind it out series that probably no one will watch. Phoenix and Nashville aren’t exactly hockey hubs and certainly won’t attract the casual fan. With goaltending being even I give Phoenix the slight edge in offense and nastiness.

Prediction: Phoenix in 7 with at least four overtimes.

“We love overtime games.”

MGM’s Official Offer to Julianne Moore for “Carrie” Remake

We already knew that Julianne Moore’s name was in the mix for potentially playing the role of Margaret White in the new “Carrie” remake. According to Deadline.com, Moore has been officially offered the role of the crazy mom with an absolutely insane personality.

Margaret White is the role of Carrie’s mother. She is very religious, but not the singing, laughing, church carnival type of religious, or even the bible-thumping door-to-door lunch interrupters… the out of her mind insane type.

The remake will be directed by Kimberly Peirce. If Moore takes this role, it could mean an Oscar nomination for her, as it did in 1976 for Piper Laurie who played Margaret White.

“This Is 40” Has A Trailer…And It’s Awesome

We all knew it was going to happen, and now that it has, I couldn’t be more grateful. Pete and Debbie, the wonderfully bitter couple from 2007’s Knocked Up finally have their own movie. All I can say is it’s about damn time, Judd! This hilarious preview only solidifies my anticipation and gives me even more of a reason to be excited for the actual movie.

Val Kilmer’s On A BMX…and Of Course, Harmony Korine is Directing

In one of the oddest trailers I’ve ever seen, Val Kilmer stars in one of three shorts that make up The Fourth Dimension. His short, entitled Lotus Community Workshop, focuses on Hector, played by Kilmer himself. Hector is a motivational speaker who is quite awful at his job. Besides that, there’s not much else we can discern from this art-comedy directed by the one and only Harmony Korine. You probably know the work of Harmony Korine through such family-friendly fare as KidsGummo, Mister Lonely, and who could forget, Trash Humpers.

It may seem like I’m mocking Korine’s work, but quite the contrary. I’m a huge fan of the guy and I think he has a really interesting way of depicting inner peace through outer chaos. I’m excited to see what he does with Kilmer’s character, but I’m even more pumped for his 2013 film Spring Breakers. Starring my wife, Selena Gomez, there’s not much known right now about the film except for the fact that it’s about four college girls who end up in jail trying to rob a restaurant to fund spring break. But knowing Korine’s style of filmmaking, it’s gonna get messy.

Now, let me reiterate that Lotus Community Workshop is just one of three films that makes up The Fourth Dimension. The other two films are directed by Aleksei Fedorchenko and Jan Kwiecinski. To be perfectly honest I have no idea what the other two films about or what they’re called. I’m just waiting to see all the interesting moments in the trailer come together in three parts. The film premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 20th, and at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 24th.
