Jeff Lemire Speaks About Wrapping Up Sweet Tooth, New Project Called Trillium
Jeff Lemire is by far my favorite comics writer out there right now. Aside from writing the best book in the New 52, the guy’s original work is spellbinding. But enough of me gushing about Jeff Lemire, the fascinating thing is his planned projects to come. Along with wrapping up his award-winning Sweet Tooth, a series which if you haven’t been reading, I implore you to go out and read right now, he mentions a new project. The project in question is called Trillium, which sounds like it’s going to be the most amazing book ever made specifically for me.
Described as “The last love story ever told,” Trillium is a sci-fi story that alternately takes place 1,784 years in the future and 92 years in the past. In the year 3797, botanist Nika Temsmith is researching a species of strange, plant-based life forms on a science station on the outskirts of colonized space.Meanwhile, in the year 1921, a war-scarred explorer named William Pike leads an expedition into the jungles of Peru in search for the fabled Lost Temple of The Incas, which is said to have magical healing properties.Despite being separated by space and time, Nika and William fall in love, and their love leads to the end of the universe.
I want this cover as a poster now.
I LOVE these kinds of ideas, in any medium. It reminds me of Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, which was a movie I loved on so many levels for a multitude of reasons. The idea of Lemire attempting Hard SF, and mixing it with “Lost history of the world” type fiction, is pretty much my favorite mixing of genres ever. It’s why I loved Lost so much, and it’s why the fact that this is only going to be a 10 issue limited series is the only thing that I can think of negatively about this project. Every single other thing has me giddy with anticipation.
You can hear watch him talk about wrapping up Sweet Tooth and even more about Trillium over here at [Newsarama]. You can even hear how to pronounce his name, if you were curious like me!
Scott Snyder Talks About His Plans For Superman
You can’t see it, but underneath his shirt, Jim Lee is wearing Batman tights.
I really dug Scott Snyder’s run on Batman lately, and read it every month right up until I couldn’t afford to any longer. What is left me with was the distinct impression that he’s a dude who knows how to write characters well and tell horrific, yet deeply haunting stories without going into shock tactics. The fact that he’s approaching Superman brings a lot of hope for me, because as I’ve said before here, the new 52 Superman comic has been quite the letdown so far. The way Snyder speaks about taking grand ideas, and really bringing a large, epic scale to his Superman story has me excited, especially since he’s using brilliant examples of Superman stories to compare it to.
via [CBR]
This Superman story really is the biggest, most epic Superman story I can do. It’s sort of like, I always imagine they’re gonna kick me off right after the story so it’s like everything I love about Superman in one. It’s similar where it really is largely about things that I find most heroic and wonderful about him is his sense of restraint in the way that he’s this super hero who has the ability to reshape the world in the way that he thinks would be best. And yet instead he challenges us to do it ourselves, and he looks to us to be inspired, and to inspire us. The story really takes its structure from that, it has the DNA of a lot of my favorite Superman stories like “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?” and “Kingdom Come” and “Red Son.”
It really sounds like he’s got something great up his sleeve. You can see the full interview here, where he talks a bit more about his other projects as well.
Jason Aaron’s New Thor Sounds Interesting, To Say The Least
I’ve never been a huge fan of Thor, but not in the way that I am with Spider-Man. I’ve just never really gotten into Thor the way other Marvel fans have. That’s not to say I don’t find his character interesting or appealing, as any loyal reader here can attest to my dislike of Spider-Man. I’ve always thought Thor was a great character, and who doesn’t love Mjolnir? My problem has always been that when I think of a definitive Thor story, I tend to go blank. This could be one of those situations where my ignorance is showing, as it did with X-Men: Days of Future Past. Regardless of my ignorance, one thing I do know is that Jason Aaron is a great writer. I’ve only just now started reading the first trade of his highly acclaimed series Scalped, which I’ve heard referred to as The Wire of comic books. Anyhow, the guys plans for the character sound like he’s got some great stories to tell, and even casual but ignorant fans of Thor can get excited for that.
via [CBR]
“What I wanted to do with this book was focus in on a big way on Thor himself,” Aaron said. “I’m going to focus on not one version of Thor but three.” He promised a young Thor drinking and carousing with Viking women, a modern Thor on a cosmic quest and a new future Thor who’s missing limbs and more. Meanwhile, all three will be attacked by a new villain described as, “This is a being who’s been stalking the cosmos for centuries killing gods. We don’t know why, and we don’t know where he came from…At the end of the day, it’s about ‘Who is Thor? What does Thor want? And how has he changed over the years?'”

New Judge Dredd ‘Year One’ Announced Alongside A Slew Of 2000 A.D Projects

If there’s one thing we can thank the recent Judge Dredd movie for, is that along with being an awesome movie, it’s brought a renewed interest in the Judge, and a seemingly coordinated plan of new projects that span the gamut of the 2000 A.D world. I’ve always had an interest in the Judge, but never really got around to readying any of his stories, having always put it off until later. However, I’ve always really found the character fascinating, and my cursory knowledge of him is particularly peaked with the announcement at NYCC Judge Dredd panel.
via [CBR]
Several major announcements were made in the course of the panel: “2000 AD” editor Matt Smith will be writing a “Judge Dredd: Year One” miniseries for IDW Publishing, and writer John Wagner, who created Judge Dredd along with artist Carlos Ezquerra, will return as the writer of the “Judge Dredd” series in 2013. Wagner’s last Dredd work was the “Day of Chaos” story.
That in and of itself is enough to get me interesting, as a ‘Year One’ series for the Judge sounds excellent. Given that for Americans at least, he’s a relatively more obscure character, it could be a great introduction for plenty of new readers to become familiar. I know it’s something I plan to pick up on my list anyway.

Brian Michael Bendis’ All New X-Men Seems… New?

So a running theme during this Comic Rack has been my ignorance of properties that are non-DC centric, and while I’d love to say I’m not a fanboy, by any stretch of the imagination, there’s no way I am not one. The difference is that I can admit when I hear a good story idea, and will be willing to give a book a shot, solely based on the strength of its idea alone. My main excuse for not doing so lately, is that I am constantly, consistently broke. Being a comics fan is quite expensive, and if you plan to follow any ongoing series that is remotely popular, at some point you’re going to have to buy multiple books to finish the story. This is one of the main reasons I’ve recently stopped reading a lot of comics, (DC included), because as much as I love them I can’t afford them, and just can’t justify *acquiring* them off the internet.
But when I hear an interesting idea, I tend to like it, and Brian Michael Bendis, love him or hate him has great ideas. His recent idea to take the X-Men and make them all new, at first had me skeptical, until I heard his pitch for it.
via [CBR]
The idea of transporting the original teenage X-Men to the future is one that’s been floating around Marvel for a while now, and it was the chance to tell that story which initially drew Bendis to “All-New X-Men.” “There was this idea at Marvel retreats called ‘Days of Future Now,'” Bendis told CBR News. “It was literally the idea that the original X-Men would come here, to what would be their ‘Days of Future Past,’ and it would be horrifying and startling for them to see what the X-Universe had turned in to. I loved this idea, but I was on the ‘Avengers’ books. It never stuck to the wall and just as a fan I wanted someone to write it so I could read it. It never happened, though.
I gotta be honest, that sounds really awesome. It’s actually something I’ll definitely read, whenever it comes to trade paperback. If you want to read more about the idea, and I mean a LOT more, along with lots of other info about Bendis’ X-Men plans, and his journey getting to this point in the X-Men timeline, just go here. You’ll be glad you did.

Countdown to Halloween #7: Ichabod Crane

Ichabod Crane.  Who does that name make you think of?  Recent audiences associate the name with Johnny Depp’s portrayal in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow.  Rightfully so.  Depp added elements to the character that no one else had even considered prior.  The truth is there are vast differences between the Ichabod Crane of 1999’s Sleepy Hollow and the original character introduced in Washington Irving’s 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.  Because of nearly two centuries of interpretation, and the blatant creepiness of the story associated with Crane, he has made #7 on the Grizzly Bomb Countdown to Halloween.

A Good Day to Die Hard: Newest Trailer, Yippee ki-yay Mother Russia!

So it was just a couple weeks ago that we got the first teaser for A Good Day to Die Hard – And I loved it. The Christmas music and the 007 comparisons – classic. Well, now we’ve got a bit more. As you’re about to see John is in Russia, presumably looking for his son. We get some Lucy, who figures to be little more than a cameo, but at least she’s there.

Anyhow, have a look…

Arrow: 1.03 – ‘Lone Gunman’

While the first two episodes of Arrow had villains, they were mainly focused on introducing us to the main cast of characters and a little bit of everyone’s back-stories. With “Lone Gunman” however, there was more of a balance between the two, and it was a nice balance. The episode started off with the somewhat irritating voiceover. This portion of voiceover was telling us about James Holder and his lack of quality control when it came to his smoke detectors.

Cut to a beautiful overlook of nighttime Starling City thanks to James Holder’s rooftop pool. I’d be okay with having a pool like that. Lucky James Holder. Sorry, no, Bad James Holder! If Arrow is on your rooftop after dark, chances are pretty good that you are not a good person, no matter what the courts say. So, Arrow is up there doing his “you have failed this city” bit when lo and behold, someone new appears. Well, they don’t really appear but their handiwork does.

Who is it?

Deadshot Arrow Lone Gunman

If you are at all familiar with Batman, then you know this man. It is none other than Deadshot! He lived up to his name because that pool I really loved? Well, it’s got a dead dude floating in it now. Suddenly, not as appealing.

In the exchange though, Oliver got nicked by one of Deadshot’s bullets. Oh bummer. Oliver has to stitch himself up.

Arrow Lone Gunman

I do have to wonder though, Oliver has the supplies in his lair to stitch up a bullet wound but he doesn’t have a damn band-aid anywhere? Just seeing him sitting at his desk with blood soaking through his shirt made me think of what a pain in the ass that would be to get clean. Come on Ollie, get it together. Then again, maybe it was the poison that made him forget about the band-aid. Poison? Oh yeah, Deadshot uses poison on his bullets. Which leads into a nice flashback and we got to see more of the mysterious hooded man on the island.

This answers the question of how Oliver learned to speak Mandarin; it’s none other than Yao Fei. It’s yet to be seen if they’ll go into Yao Fei’s long and somewhat detailed backstory, but obviously the physician and archer parts are playing a key role. We also see where Oliver learned about the “chew something that looks like rosemary to stop the poison” thing.

Arrow Lone GunmanOllie heads home after waking up from his drug induced nap, and well I’ll be, Thea’s been arrested. Is it too early to dislike a character? Because I can not stand Thea. I just want her to either pull her head out of her obnoxious ass and become a contributing member of society or them to make her into Speedy. I don’t really want her to become Speedy but I just want Thea to disappear. Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone. While we’re on the subject, what is the deal with Mommy Queen being so “I’m a good person and parent” in this episode? I mean, I know Oliver gave her crap for the Thea thing but not one hint to her darkside that we know exists. No mention of what Oliver knows or what his dad told him. I want the Evil Queen to return. Thea leaves, Evil Queen comes back. I’ll be pleased as punch if those two things were to occur.

It was only a matter of time before Oliver had to find a way to get to his base without always having to ditch Diggle. Apparently he’s decided to open a nightclub. How stereotypical privileged party boy of a move is that? Come on. I loved Diggle calling him out on the “white knight” thing Oliver has going on.

Perhaps the second best part of the episode is when Oliver decided that he needed to go find a bullet that Deadshot used. To do so he had to go all Assassin’s Creed and climb the side of a building. But unlike in Assassin’s Creed when you can hear people question what on earth (insert name of preferred ancestor of Desmond Miles here) is doing, not a single soul comments on Oliver’s wall climbing stunt.  Perhaps this is the best place to open a nightclub/have a secret lair.

Arrow Lone Gunman

The bullet led Oliver to the Russian mob that he apparently became a ranking member of during his time as a shipwrecked castaway. Come again? I daresay that took me by surprise.

I do wonder what kind of timeline this episode had because one minute Oliver is showing Tommy and Diggle the location of his new nightclub, and the next Laurel is reading about said nightclub online. She’s telling her coworker that she’s totally over Oliver but I think we all know the truth. But who cares about the truth because hello! This happened!

Arrow Lone Gunman

You go girl! Now all she needs is some fishnet stockings and a tight fitting bustier and the Black Canary will take her rightful place in the show. So exciting as I’d actually feared they’d keep Laurel as that helpless chick she was in episode two. Thankfully my worry was all for naught.

So while Oliver was climbing buildings and planning night clubs openings and then getting his ass kicked by bouncers at another club, Deadshot was tattooing names onto his body. There was quite a few names already there but one stood out in particular- Andrew Diggle- especially considering that we learn that Diggle had a brother who was killed doing the same type of work. Did Deadshot kill Diggle’s brother? Is the tattooed name just a shoutout to Andy Diggle, who wrote Green Arrow: Year One? I’m guessing we’ll find out soon.

Arrow Lone Gunman

Speaking of Diggle, his sister in law works at none other than DC Universe’s own, Big Belly Burger! This was the second time I had a DC Universe “moment”, the first being when the annoying voiceover let us know that Deadshot had killed people in Markovia. It’s those kinds of little things that get fans really excited about your show so kudos to Arrow.

Non-kudos to whoever was doing DirecTV’s captioning because they seem to think this woman:

is named Felicity Smoke. Come on people, get with the program- that is Felicity SMOAK and isn’t she just the cutest little IT girl ever? That scene did provide some fun back and forth as Oliver tried to claim the laptop he brought her needed help due to a spilled latte. Nothing gets past that Felicity though and she deftly points out that those are bullet holes, not spilled coffee. Oliver’s only recourse is to admit that “my coffee shop is in a bad neighborhood”. Chuckle, chuckle.

That coffeehouse was actually the hotel room of Deadshot and the latte was his wrist mounted machine guns but hey, let’s not get bogged down in facts here. The rest of the episode was the predictable auction, with the predictable saving from Deadshot’s bullet by Detective Lance, and Oliver’s predictable stashing of his Arrow get-up in the stairway trashcan and then the fight with Deadshot.

Two things that were not predictable-

One: HE KILLED DEADSHOT?!?!?!

Arrow Lone Gunman

Surely not, right? I mean come on. If they are going to kill a DC villain each episode, the show isn’t going to last too terribly long. I know there are a lot of them but there aren’t an infinite number. So I’m choosing to believe that Deadshot is not dead but perhaps just unconscious and yea, that eye is not going to make it, so I’m guessing he’ll be a one eyed Deadshot. [Ed. Note – Not for 1 second do I believe Deadshot is dead. The character has a long history of faking his own death…]

Two: OH MY GOD HE TOLD DIGGLE!!!!
Diggle gets shot, Arrow rushes him back to his base so he can give him the grass stuff that looks like rosemary. Diggle wakes up to see Oliver standing there still in his Arrow clothes but the “mask” is now gone and he just says “hey” and the episode ends!

So much for “no one can know”, but seriously, how long was he going to be able to keep it from him? The man has already told him that he’s going to have to watch him pee so it was only a matter of time before he found out any way. I was just not expecting them to do it so early.

Overall, not a bad episode. I’m still a little miffed about Deadshot possibly being dead and I could not care less about the whole “Laurel used to date/sleep with Tommy” bit and as far as I’m concerned, Thea can take a long walk off a short pier but for the most part I liked it. I’m going to go with three and a half bears on this one. Get rid of Thea, make Laurel the Black Canary and we’d be at a solid four.

Next Episode – “An Innocent Man”. I can’t wait!

The Walking Dead: 3.02 – “Sick” Review

Yes, it has been a few days since the episode “Sick” aired on AMC. You can’t blame us for the late posting! I am from Detroit, so we are very caught up in our whole being in the world series thing.

Now then… let’s get to it! This episode took me by surprise for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, there has been some character development. For one brief instance, I liked Carol’s character. I know… I was surprised too. She is always so damn useless and unimpressive. When I see her, I yawn. However, in this episode, Carol levels up. She has been trained by Hershel to assist with Lori’s medical needs when she delivers the baby, so she is helping with Hershel’s lost limb situation. She also kills a female walker to practice performing a Caesarean section when Lori goes into labor. For about one small second, Carol, I liked you.

T-Dog also got slightly more badass! Usually, T-Dog’s job is to stand around and exist. In this episode, T-Dog gets chatty when the fellas confront the other survivors. T-Dog can be quite the cool character!

Oh yes, the others! The five prisoners who survived the attack on the prison were brought out of the cafeteria, where they had been eating, sleeping, defecating and apparently working out since the walkers started appearing. The cafeteria had massive amounts of food for the group, which Rick agreed to split with the five in exchange for helping them clear out another cell block for the possibly dangerous group to stay in.

Big Tiny started off as my favorite of the new guys. Unfortunately, he couldn’t handle the reality of the situation when he got scratched by a walker. The crazy Mexican convict bashed Big Tiny’s brains in, but not just enough to kill him; the psycho obliterated him. When I saw this, I knew he was going to die, and he got taken care of after he tossed a walker at Rick.

Now we have 3 of the 5 prisoners left. The little guy with the bat runs off and is PRESUMED dead, but since when do they kill people off-screen on this show? The other 2 are moved into another cell block and told to stay out of the way.

Hershel remains alive,  not a walker, although the very dimwitted Lori gave him mouth to mouth and I panicked because he looked like he might attack her. I am glad that he is alive, however if he had died I would understand. Here is what I keep thinking about… Hershel now has 1 and a half legs, a baby is about to be born, and Lori (if she survives giving birth) will be out of commission for a bit. Having a baby with no drugs or modern medicine…imagine that! I am in pain just thinking about it. Good thing Carl never stays where he’s told…

While my mind would be full of how to survive, Lori’s is full of her need for Rick to talk to her about their relationship. Boring! My thoughts: She should wait it out! He doesn’t necessarily have any other options, I mean, the world is full of the undead and a possible few stragglers. He will stop thinking with his brain one day, and start thinking with his genitalia. And we all know she’s good for that! *wink*

This week was very exciting, however I feel like the prisoners were taken care of very quickly. The Hispanic guy could have been a great villain!  I liked the character development, even if it was subtle.

‘Evil Dead’ Remake Red Band Trailer Is Here, & It Looks Amazing.

I’ve been a fan of Evil Dead ever since I first saw it when I was 10, and like the lot of Evil Dead fans, considered it pretty sacrilegious to even entertain the idea of a remake. That of course, goes with the caveat that some studio would cheaply acquire the rights, churn out some lamesauce snooze-fest, and call it a day. Well when times pass and all of the original creators of Evil Dead are all rallying behind the remake, have hand-picked the talent behind it, and are producing it themselves, as well as literally assuring fans it’s gonna be good, then you should take that as a sign to stop being such a cynic and get pumped for gory fun. If that wasn’t enough, the trailer has just arrived, and boy howdy is it a doozy. Continue reading ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Red Band Trailer Is Here, & It Looks Amazing.
