Hollywood is a truly magical land; a land where an American raised in Australia can play a convincing enough Scotsman to win an Oscar for Best Picture. Well, butter your shortbread and secure your kilts lads and lassies, it looks like Braveheart is coming to the small screen. Variety reports:
A drama series on the life of William Wallace — subject of Oscar picture-winner “Braveheart” — is being developed by STV Prods. in association with Digital Rights Group, Nine/8 Entertainment and Creative Media.
“Wallace” will focus on the backstory of its central figure, his years spent attempting to unify Scotland, his major battles and his personal life.
“This was a turbulent time in Scotland’s history, in which William Wallace had a starring and pivotal role,” STV content director Alan Clements said. “We plan to delve deep into his character and explore his passions, bringing parts of history to life in a spectacular and raw depiction. With all eyes on Scotland in the current political climate, this also seems to be a very appropriate time to tell this story in more depth.”
Well, that could be interesting. If it doesn’t turn into a historical dramatization like on the History Channel, that is. So we’re going deep into the character of William Wallace to find the “passions” he apparently possesses that the movie couldn’t get to because he was too busy lifting his kilt to English noblemen and getting his intestines ripped out. Maybe we’ll find out that he was passionate about art or music. Maybe he was the world’s first hipster. Maybe he was pursuing a career in fashion design. Maybe he had a world-famous rock garden. Or maybe, he liked to swim in giant pools of money with his pal Scrooge McDuck.
In all seriousness, Braveheart is my favorite movie and they better depict William Wallace as the stone-faced badass that he was.
If this show is in the same vein as Spartacus and Game of Thrones (as THR reports), it will have a ready-made audience happy to follow it. They’ll need to make the Scottish people much less incoherent if they want to bring the show to the U.S. I just hope they have a random crazy Irishman.
