Did Ubisoft Kill Assassin’s Creed Movie?

Hollywood insiders are saying that the Assassin’s Creed film franchise is guaranteed to fail.

New York Magazine reported that Sony has recently signed a movie deal with Ubisoft to adapt Assassin’s Creed. However, in order to get this deal to happen, Sony just about had to give Ubisoft complete creative control over the project. It’s reported that Ubisoft has final say on budget, cast, script, and even the release date.

An insider is reported as saying, “As a director, even Steven Spielberg cannot get this kind of deal.”, and as a producer he was apparently one of the first to pass on the project because of the demands made by Ubisoft.

I’m a little unsure about Ubisoft’s goals. I can’t tell if they want to make sure that a movie never gets made or if they want to make sure it gets made right. Personally, I have hope that they will prove the naysayers wrong and make a kick ass movie. The cinematics that they produce for their games are almost good enough to be movies on their own.

Vintage Reviews: Nosferatu

F.W. Murnau‘s film is a true classic of not just horror films, but of films in general. Made in 1922 it is the first film version of Dracula. This fact also means we are very lucky to be able to watch it at all. Neither Murnau nor the production company had acquired the rights to ‘Dracula’. They did change names – Dracula to Orlok and Harker to Hutter, for instance – and locations, but it was still far too close to the book. Bram Stokers widow sued the German production company, and a judge ordered the film destroyed. Thankfully, at least one copy survived.

And so to the plot: Thomas Hutter is an Estate Agents clerk in the German city of Wisbourg. His employer – the strange Knock – sends him to the Carpathian Mountains – Transylvania! – to sell a house – the one opposite Hutters house – to the mysterious Count Orlok.

The nearer he travels to the Counts castle the more terrified the locals are. The sinister edifice he finally reaches is deserted, apart from the nefarious Count. As the Count heads off to Wisbourg to claim his new home – slowly killing off the crew of the ship one by one – Hutter tries to make it back to warn everyone.

The cities inhabitants succumb to ‘the plague’, causing wide-spread panic.

Only when Hutter’s young wife sacrifices herself – tricking Orlok into being caught by the sun’s rays – does the terror stop.

Incidentally, it is from this film that the myth that vampires can be killed by sunlight starts.

Nosferatu is one of those movies that everyone should see. It maybe silent – and I know that some people will hold that against it – but this is a cinematic icon.
Obviously it is over-melodramatic, but most – if not all – silent films are. The visuals are stunning though. Murnau’s use of light and shade are sublime. His use of shadow to represent the vampire is also brilliant – Orlok’s shadow stalking up the stairs, near the end of the film, is an image most people will recognize.

Max Schreck is one of the creepiest vampires ever to grace the screen. Whilst vampires for a very long time – and even, sometimes, still today – were styled on Lugosi’s Dracula, Schreck’s Orlok is almost unique – only in Salem’s Lot do we find a vampire looking similar.

This is, without a doubt, the best film version of Dracula to exist. To give it any less than 5 out of 5 would be a crime.

8 New Character Posters for ‘The Hunger Games’

While movie posters aren’t exactly the most thrilling aspects of a film production, they can do loads for setting the tone and planting a seed in the minds of the public (See the wonderful District 9 posters, for example). Particularly for upcoming movies that haven’t disclosed much footage yet, a poster can be all we have to get an idea of the direction a project is taking, and this is certainly the case with The Hunger Games film, which released a teaser that managed to show absolutely nothing in a minute and six seconds.

However we have been treated to a simply awesome motion poster for the movie in the past, and now we’ve been handed 8 new character posters that feel just perfect, and thank God because some of the casting decisions have seemed way out of left field. Sure, a still photo of a shadowy profile isn’t much to go on, but I never thought Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks or Lenny Kravitz would look right in their roles and yet here we are:

You can find all 8 of the new posters here at IMP Awards. I’m real excited for the Hunger Games trilogy, if you can’t tell.

What do you think of the secretiveness of this, or other movie productions? Like it? Hate it? Think it’s stupid to get all caught up in a picture?

Riddick Sequel Strapped For Cash

According to TMZ the new Chronicles of Riddick movie has been pretty much killed thanks to money problems.

From the sounds of things, money has been a constant issue on the set of the new Riddick film. It has even gotten to the point that Vin Diesel has gone on record to say that he would consider working for scale in order to get an R-rated version of the film made. It’s been reported that the owner of the studio in Montreal where the film is being shot changed all the locks and kicked everyone off the set last Wednesday.

According to Michael Trudel, the owner of the studio, this happened because the production company failed to pay its fees on time.

TMZ is also claiming that “sources connected to production tell us several members of the crew have not been paid in over 2 weeks … and are very concerned about getting their money.”

Now personally I could care less if another Riddick movie gets made. I thought the only movie worth seeing out of the bunch was Pitch Black. Dark Fury was terrible and Chronicles of Riddick wasn’t much better.

“Canada is so cold, please let me back in the studio.”

#1 – Countdown to Halloween: GHOSTBUSTERS

One of the perennial classics of my childhood, a movie I’ve seen over a hundred times and continue to enjoy, is Ghostbusters. For those uncultured enough to who have never seen this opus, it chronicles the misadventures of four men who set out to make a living off the dead. More accurately, removing the dead from places they are unwanted. This group of hero entrepreneurs consists of 3 scientists, and a 4th, oft-forgotten member with no real background in science, but who offers a touch of faith. These 4 men (or 3 white dudes if you look at any poster for the film) embark on a marathon session cleaning up New York and ridding it of paranormal activity.
