#16 – Countdown to Halloween: THE RING

The American version of The Ring, released in 2002 and starred Naomi Watts in the role of an inattentive mother/journalist. Let me begin this by saying that although I love this movie, there are bits and pieces that I do not like.

The Ring is a movie about a video tape. This video tape was made by a little girl named Samara. The tape is said to be cursed. If you watch it, you will shortly after receive a phone call saying that you are going to die in 7 days. Seven days later, the curse never fails. The deaths are all different and many look like accidents.

#17 – Countdown to Halloween: WES CRAVEN’S NEW NIGHTMARE

As a Freddy Krueger fan, New Nightmare is one of my favorite films. The story behind this movie is absolutely unique and creepy.

The Plot: New Nightmare revolves around Heather Langenkamp, who plays herself in this movie. She has a family: A husband, Chase, who works in special effects (played by David Newsom) and a son, Dylan, (played by Miko Hughes) who is absolutely adorable. Heather tries to keep Dylan from seeing her movies (her involvement in the Nightmare on Elm Street series was major), but throughout the movie, it becomes an impossibility.

#18 – Countdown to Halloween: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

This is a comical take on the classic story of Frankenstein’s monster. Here it is perpetuated though his Grandson and told to us by comic legend Mel Brooks, in what I consider to be his finest work.

This 1974 masterpiece of ‘horror spoofed comedy’ predates Scary Movie by more than 25 years, and is easily a funnier film. The more subtle jokes were mixed nicely with the slapstick aspects of the movie creating a pleasing flow. It was sharply written and perfectly executed, and the all-star ensemble is brilliantly cast.

Especially Teri Garr‘s boobs.

#19 – Countdown to Halloween: THE THING (2011)

Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s The Thing, which is a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic by the same name, is based on the short story ‘Who Goes There?“. That is the same story for which 1951’s The Thing from Another World is based. So you could say it’s a remake of the 1951 film, but the 50s crew changed so much it’s hardly connected anymore. Got all that? Alright, now that the lineage is determined, let’s move on the film itself.

The movie starts off with a group of Norwegians in Antarctica investigating what appears to be a distress signal when they fall through the ice to discover a massive spaceship.

#20 – Coundown to Halloween: SAW: The Series

The SAW series is one of my favorites. When I watched the first SAW movie, it began almost comically. I remember seeing Cary Elwes in what had to be his worst acting job…ever. I had not heard anything about the movie when I saw it and thought that with the clearly low-budget (it was an independent film directed by James Wan) I should give it a chance. About half of the way through the first movie, I fell in love! SAW got very scary very fast. It became real to me. This very dangerous situation could happen to anyone.

#21b – Countdown to Halloween: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

We already saw Doc Kronner’s take on this classic, so here is another opinion from TheBustedBoxes…

This is simply the classic Halloween horror flick in my mind. It has influenced everything from video games to music videos ala Thriller….
