First Official World War Z Trailer

Well, it happened.  It’s finally here.  Our beloved Max Brooks, author of best selling classics The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z has been adapted to film. The first official trailer for World War Z starring Brad Pitt and Mireille Enos was released today, and it is nothing short of intense.  I have never seen so many bodies stacked on top of each other before.  The trailer gave us some truly stunning visuals of panic that I’ve never imagined. Due out next summer, will it be in time or will the zombie craze have starved itself by then?  My projection is that it will be a delicious treat.

I loved seeing the first trailer of a zombie inspired film without having truly received a great image of the antagonist.  I compare it to the build up of when Jaws finally pops out of the water.  Considering this is the first trailer and the film isn’t due out until next summer, this was a great reveal.  We have been enticed, but there is still much awaiting the audience.

There are two different types of zombies as I classify them.  There is the Romero, and the Boyle.  The Romero is slow moving with poor motor skills and possesses its greatest strength only when accompanied by numbers.  Then there is the Boyle, an energized take on the classic zombie that appears to be fueled by the crazed fires of hell.  We’ve seen this type represented as the newer generation in such modern classics as the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, and the 28 Days/Weeks Later series.

It appears World War Z is utilizing the latter to create a truly action packed, ride of suspense and excitement.  I feel it’s a good direction when all things considered, the zombie genre has been beat to death in the past ten years.  This trailer presents the sheer panic of numbers with the intense violence of the Boyle zombie.

When considering if the film is landing too late, I would have to say no.  For one, its got Brad Pitt.  Two, its got Brad Pitt.  And three, there are lunatic fanatics such as myself that would even sit through trash like Survival of the Dead because it has Romero’s name on it.  Zombie flicks are like the Field of Dreams.  “If you build it, they will come.”  So far, I can’t tell how closely the film adaptation will follow the literary excellence of Brooks, but that can only be concluded upon actually seeing it.  What I can guarantee is that Brooks is a great place to start when it comes to great zombie story telling.

A Good Day to Die Hard: Newest Trailer, Yippee ki-yay Mother Russia!

So it was just a couple weeks ago that we got the first teaser for A Good Day to Die Hard – And I loved it. The Christmas music and the 007 comparisons – classic. Well, now we’ve got a bit more. As you’re about to see John is in Russia, presumably looking for his son. We get some Lucy, who figures to be little more than a cameo, but at least she’s there.

Anyhow, have a look…

‘Evil Dead’ Remake Red Band Trailer Is Here, & It Looks Amazing.

I’ve been a fan of Evil Dead ever since I first saw it when I was 10, and like the lot of Evil Dead fans, considered it pretty sacrilegious to even entertain the idea of a remake. That of course, goes with the caveat that some studio would cheaply acquire the rights, churn out some lamesauce snooze-fest, and call it a day. Well when times pass and all of the original creators of Evil Dead are all rallying behind the remake, have hand-picked the talent behind it, and are producing it themselves, as well as literally assuring fans it’s gonna be good, then you should take that as a sign to stop being such a cynic and get pumped for gory fun. If that wasn’t enough, the trailer has just arrived, and boy howdy is it a doozy. Continue reading ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Red Band Trailer Is Here, & It Looks Amazing.

Meet Q: Skyfall’s New Quartermaster

If you know anything about James Bond, you know that his best weapons are his wits and his suave, sophisticated manner. Besides that, however, his access to gadgetry is a major part of what makes him cool. If you know that, then you also are aware that “Q”, or Quartermaster, is the one who develops and supplies him with the cutting edge tech that helps him get the job done. In this brand new clip from Skyfall we meet Bond’s new Q. Clearly he’s…not quite what Bond was expecting. But, as they say, age ain’t nothin’ but a number.

Skyfall is due in theaters November 9, 2012.

Will the new Q be able to fill the shoes of those that came before? Do you like the new direction that the franchise is taking? Sound off in the comments below!

Cruise is Playing ‘Jack Reacher’ – We got some Trailers…

With the release of the second Jack Reacher trailer, I can’t help but voice the disappointment felt by Lee Child fans.  However, not all are aware of the character’s origin, and therefore, there are two perspectives in which we can analyze these trailers.  There are those of us familiar with Lee Child’s work, and those who are not.

For those not familiar with Lee Child, he is the author of a gritty crime series of novels featuring Jack Reacher.  The character was first introduced in 1997’s Killing Floor and has since been the main character of 17 Child novels.  To the audience who has not read any of these books, I am sure the trailer looks like an awesome new action suspense film starring the well defined Tom Cruise.  Regardless of the shenanigans we hear about in his personal life, Cruise has still earned a prominent title as an action star.  The Mission Impossible franchise alone has been met with huge box office support.  The fact that the Reacher character resembles his previous role of Ethan Hunt should generate box office support for this title as well.

The set up seems very neo-noir in which we have a, “Who done it?” sequence.  We are also flashed with some clips of Reacher kicking a little butt, and taking a few names.  It was also entertaining to see how Reacher gets the fuzz off of his tail and blends into the crowd next to what I am calling a Morgan Freeman look-alike.  All in all, the film appears to be following 2005’s One Shot close enough.  The general plot is that a man is arrested for the murders of five people killed by an expert sniper.  He asks that they “Get Jack Reacher.”  Reacher shows up but his intention is to prove the man’s guilt, not innocence.  As cliché as it can get, Reacher gets more than he bargained for.

Now to voice the opinion of disappointed Child fans.  Child is detailed and meticulous in his writing.  He has spent over fifteen years developing this character over the course of seventeen novels.  One Shot is the ninth of the seventeen.  So why now?  Why One Shot?  Most importantly, why on Earth was Tom Cruise cast as Jack Reacher?  Jack Reacher, described as being 6’5 somewhere between 210 to 250 pounds, is in no way resembled by Tom Cruise.

Amid the disappointment, I was laughing out loud while watching these trailers considering how many times Cruise is filmed from low angles to give the illusion of height.  All things considered, any one of the previous cast choices would have sufficed.  Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Vince Vaughn, Jamie Foxx, and Will Smith were all considered for the role.  With the selection of Cruise, I can’t help but feel this film is poorly managed and doomed from the start.  Though the PG-13 rating should accommodate a greater audience, true fans will be disappointed that the violence described in the books will not be present in the film.

Reacher is effective not only due to his cunning prowess, but also, his sheer intimidation of size and stature.  Cruise fails to demonstrate this intimidation what so ever.  Reacher is not supposed to be a character that you under estimated, and later wished you hadn’t messed with him.  He is supposed to be a guy that if you saw on the street, you might lower your head a bit when you walk past to make sure you avoid eye contact.  Ultimately, I feel mis-casting will lead to the demise of this film.  It will have its initial box office splurge with those unaware of previous novels but ultimately, I do not expect this film to have any lasting value.

Terrible Photoshop…

The First ‘Iron Man 3’ Trailer has Arrived!

So first we had the teaser for the trailer, and now we have the teaser trailer…

Explosions! Iron Man suit without Tony Stark! The Mandarin played by the perennially sexy Ben Kingsley! Pepper Potts is kidnapped! And then strapped into the Mr. Freeze roller coaster at Six Flags over St. Louis! I don’t know if that’s right but it feels good so I’m going with it!

I’m part of the 1%… of people who actually like Gwyneth Paltrow and I like the movie character of Pepper Potts. So sue me, she’s cute and likable. Even though we did get a glimpse of Don Cheadle as James Rhodes (sidenote: if you aren’t watching House of Lies on Showtime, you are missing out), where was Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan?

Seriously- Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian. Just from what little we can see of the suit and the hair, it looks like he’s moments away from shooting at Crockett and Tubbs of Miami Vice fame.

Overall initial impression- I like it. I’m a big fan of when traditionally “happy” things turn a little dark. Tony Stark has always been the Whopper eating shit grinned billionaire playboy without many cares in the world (I mean there have been obvious cares to tend to but he’s done so usually with a somewhat good attitude) so it’s nice to see him be a little bit more introspective.

This obviously won’t be the only trailer released but even if it was, I’m excited. Marvel seems to have found their groove with this group of movies and for the time being, they aren’t feeling played out. Now ask me again when we reach Iron Man 7, but for now, I’m looking forward to Iron Man 3.

This doesn’t have a lot to do with Iron Man specifically but seeing his mountain side palace be blown to smithereens reminded me of it. I was listening to NPR the other day and a story came on about superheroes and their finances. It was entertaining, if nothing else. You can listen to it here and if you were so inclined you can order the book The Law of Superheroes from Amazon.
